    1. The DLSU AIMS Program Overview

The ASEAN International Mobility for Students (AIMS) Programme, formally known as M-I-T, aims to create a vibrant student mobility programme for citizens of all SEAMEO (Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization) member countries initiated in 2009 as collaboration between the governments of Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Additional Southeast Asian nations are now invited to join the efforts of M-I-T and collectively develop a regional Southeast Asian student mobility programme.

The Philippines became a member country of the AIMS Programme in 2013 through the Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) initiative to “improve the quality of education, develop human resources and establish a Filipino knowledge-based society” which is also mandated to “guide Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Philippines, students and academic personnel in capitalizing on prospects presented by internationalization and ensure that further opportunities brought about by the impending ASEAN integration will help in improving the Philippine higher education system.” (CMO No. 11, Series of 2014)

De La Salle University is now actively involved in the ASEAN International Mobility for Students Programme, offering the following study fields for students who wish to participate in the DLSU AIMS Programme: Business, Engineering, Economics, and Language and Culture.

With Japan, and Korean universities participating in the AIMS Programme, more student mobility opportunities are now available for local and international students to interact and develop a deeper sense of multicultural understanding and cooperation.

    1. Preferred schedule of arrival in the Philippines

International students are advised to arrive at least one (1) week before the opening of the Term. Arrival should be between Monday to Friday and preferably within working hours from
8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Availability of university vehicle and university personnel for airport pick-up is only during working days and official working hours. For special arrangement, international student must inform his/her International Office so that this can be properly coordinated with DLSU International Center.

    1. Visa and permit for study

The International Center shall handle the processing of Special Study Permit (SSP) at the Bureau of Immigration. The SSP allows the international student to study at a Philippine university for a period of three to six months (1 – 2 trimesters). The Bureau of Immigration
requires this under Philippines laws on foreigners studying in the country. An updated
tourist/travel visa is required for all international students who are using SSP.

      • Total cost of a Special Study Permit and Alien Certificate of Registration Information Card: Php9,000.00. This will be processed by the International Center after the student has paid the fee at the DLSU Accounting Office during the Orientation Day.
      • Tourist visa extension fees – approximately Php17,430 for four months. This will be paid by the international student at the Philippine Bureau of Immigration.

    1. Housing and Accommodation

Inbound students are strongly advised to house themselves near the University. DLSU currently provides a limited number of condominium units or flats in two condominiums near DLSU, the Providence Hotel and the EGI Taft Tower. There is a University-run dormitory called The La Sallian Center, however, this can only accommodate a limited number of students. The International Center will assist exchange students in finding appropriate condominium/dormitory around the vicinity of the campus. A condominium/flat unit near the university would cost an average of PHP 25,000.00 a month for single occupancy, but this can be converted to twin sharing so two students can divide the cost. The rate is exclusive of electricity bills, water and other utilities. Dormitory rates range from Php4,5000 to Php8,000 (room sharing of up to quadruple) while dormtel accommodation (dormitory type hotel) would cost around Php8,500 to Php15,000 (single to double occupancy).

Inbound students who are accepted will receive a Housing Reservation Form for their preferred accommodation. The International Center will provide a detailed list of off-campus housing residences and the process of reservation together with the student’s Acceptance/Offer Letter.

For inquiries about the housing services and arrangement of accommodation, please email Ms. Rita Colar at [email protected]

    1. Learning English

Aside from the English academic programs offered by the De La Salle University Department of English and Applied Linguistics (DEAL), there are non-academic English courses that can be taken or enrolled in by interested international students. The Center for Language and Lifelong Learning (CELL) is a non-academic unit of DLSU which caters to clients who are interested in improving and honing their English Language proficiency in the four basic communication skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The Center is proud of its teachers who are specialists in their fields, particularly on English Language and its
application. All language teachers are carefully screened and their continuing education is
mandatory. This makes the Center the best of its kind on this side of the world.

CELL offers classes in modules; they have Regular Classes (with 4 to 14 students), Special Classes (with 2 to 3 students) and Tutorial Classes (one-on-one) and classes cover conversational English (basic to advance), English grammar, pronunciation, reading comprehension and vocabulary development among others. Please check the CELL website for details regarding schedule of enrollment, fees, registration and other information: www.dlsu.edu.ph/academics/colleges/ced/cell/default.asp
