Overview of the Unit
Established in 1991, the Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center (BNSCWC) continues to be at the helm of De La Salle University’s effort to preserve the tradition of excellence in creative writing, criticism, and performance-based research in the country. It is one with DLSU in the belief that quality work is best cultivated in the spirit of vital engagement with tradition and innovation—decisive moments in the making of a nation’s literary and cultural heritage.
Founded in honor of the late Filipino-American writer Bienvenido N. Santos, the Center provided programs that served as venues for the academic community to explore the writing process. It continued to expand its reach beyond the academe, and now includes the development of other artistic and critical practices.
At the forefront are award-winning writers and respected practitioners who are invited both from within and outside of DLSU to share their craft in workshops, lectures, conferences, and other gatherings.
The Center responds to the national and international artistic environment in its role of enriching the cultural life of the country and the world. It participates in literary and artistic exchanges and hosts international artists in the spirit of collaboration.
Fostering a Tradition of Excellence in Creative Writing
The Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center (BNSCWC) believes in the value of the work and vision of creative writers as well as artists and critics, and serves to hone creative skills for the enhancement of the cultural life of the university, the country, and the world.
It envisions that the writers and artists who will be served by its programs and projects will also serve communities, so that there will be continuity in the tradition of excellence in creative writing, criticism, and performance-based research in the country.
It upholds its openness to artistic collaborations and linkages nationally and internationally.
