Course Description for the Program

ECOPRIN Principles of Economics
3 units
As an introductory economics course for Industrial Engineering majors, the basic principles of economics will be covered. The first part of the course covers microeconomic concepts such as scarcity, factors of production, prices, costs, opportunity cost, supply and demand of products, and consumer behavior. The second part discusses producer output as an IE concern. Concepts like productivity and efficiency are introduced and applied to production function, costs, and firm behavior in various types of market. The last part introduces macroeconomics, including a model of the economy, and the standard Aggregate Demand-Aggregate Supply model. Topics on this last part include GDP and GNP, fiscal policy, aggregate supply stimulation, monetary policy, and other government activities in the macroeconomy.

MANACIE Managerial Accounting for IE Majors
3 units
The course introduces principles and procedures in accounting necessary to construct balance sheet and income statement for single proprietorship, partnership, and corporation. It also discusses the preparation of the statement of cost of goods sold for manufacturing concern and the analysis of financial statement through ratios.

COSACIE Cost Accounting for IE Majors
3 units
The course deals with the basic concepts, principles and techniques of full cost accounting and differential cost accounting with emphasis on their managerial applications. The course will also focus on how to compute costs for products and services which will serve as basis for their cost of goods sold.  The course will also deal on how to control and budget expenses of products and services.

ENGDAT1 Probability and Statistics for IE
3 units
The course is the introductory course in data collection and statistical analysis for Industrial Engineering majors. It will cover the following topics with an advanced view other than covered in fundamental statistics: probability and counting techniques, random variables and their probability distribution, special discrete and continuous probability distributions as used in industrial statistical experiments, hypothesis testing, linear regression with correlational analysis. The course will give instruction on computation technology and the interpretation of statistical reports.

INDUMAT Advanced Mathematics for Industrial Engineering

Advanced Mathematics for Industrial Engineering deals with the mathematical theories, concepts, and applications needed in the advanced courses in IE and in the industrial engineering profession.

PROMGT1 Operations Management
4 units
This is an introductory course on operations management, its concepts, activities, tools and techniques. The course covers demand forecasting, process and capacity planning, aggregate planning, supply chain management, inventory management, material requirements planning, learning curves, scheduling, and maintenance. Other topics, such as product design, location and layout planning, work design and measurement, etc. are covered in higher course of the production management series.

IEOPER1 Operations Research 1
3 units
The course deals with the fundamental concepts of Linear Programming. These concepts include linear programming model formulation, duality theory and sensitivity analysis.

INDUORG Industrial Organization and Management
3 units
This is an introductory course in industrial organization and management.  It looks into how the human brain works and how it develops personalities in people that become critical in how they relate with one another at the workplace. Understanding work team synergies to attain organizational effectiveness and work efficiencies to attain work objectives. The course progresses into learning the important functions of management, i.e. planning, leading, organizing, and controlling, in an organization.   Towards the end of the course, Total Quality Management (TQM) will be discussed, its origins and how it developed towards present day standards of quality management.

BIOERG1 Physical Ergonomics
1 unit
This course is concerned with the study of specific human traits and characteristics that are needed for engineering design. Properties of the human body as manifested in people’s interaction with the environment are explored. This course is an integration of biological science, physiological and experimental psychology, physics and engineering. The focus is on engineering design in order to ensure safety, comfort, efficiency and performance reliability as an individual interacts with tools, machine, work environment, and job design of a task assigned to him.

LBYIE2E Physical Ergonomics Lab
3 units
This course is the laboratory component of physical ergonomics. Experiments conducted in this class supplement the theories learned on illumination, noise, anthropometry, posture analysis, and manual material handling. Some of the experiments are conducted in the field to gather real time data.

IEECONO Engineering Economics for IE Majors
3 units
The course deals with the basic concepts and techniques of analysis useful in evaluating the worth of engineering and business projects in relation to their cost. It covers an introduction to basic accounting principles, interest and money-time relationships, depreciation and evaluation, methods of economy studies, comparison of alternatives, with and without the effects of income taxes, replacement studies, and effect of Inflation on economy studies.

The course covers the following topics: integer linear programming, special linear programming models (transportation, transshipment, and assignment problems), networking, dynamic programming, and goal programming.

LBYIE3J Operations Research Lab
1 unit
The course is the laboratory component of the Operations Research (OR) series. Students will learn how to solve OR models using commercially available software. The course covers the following topics: translating known search heuristics (bisection, secant, golden search, etc) into MATLAB codes. Using MATLAB and GAMS to solve optimization models, perform nested optimization, and conduct Monte Carlo simulation

PROMGT2 Work Study and Measurement

Production Management 2 (Work Improvement and Measurement aka Methods Engineering) is the core of the Industrial Engineering discipline. It discusses the concepts, techniques, and methodologies of work design and work measurement, and how they are applied in productivity enhancements.

LBYIE3A Work Study and Measurement Lab

This is a three-hour per week laboratory class for application of tools and technique on work improvement and measurement.

SYSENG1 Systems Engineering 1 Lecture
2 units
This course is the first in a two-part series designed to introduce students to the foundational concepts, methodologies, and practices of systems analysis and design. The primary objective of this initial course is to guide students through the process of identifying a suitable problem for a capstone design project and conducting a thorough analysis of its underlying causes. Students will learn and apply tools such as situation appraisal and problem analysis to systematically investigate and understand complex issues. The course emphasizes the critical processes utilized by managers in problem-solving and decision-making, focusing on techniques that involve comprehensive situational understanding and analytical inquiry. Central to this course is the Rational Management methodology developed by Kepner-Tregoe, Inc., which provides a structured approach to logical reasoning and decision-making that underpins effective systems analysis and design.

COGERG2 Cognitive Ergonomics
1 unit
This is an introductory course in cognitive ergonomics. Lectures include topics on signal detection theory, vigilance, information processing, learning, memory, mental workload, visual and auditory displays, and usability engineering. The course also relates cognitive limitations to the design of effective products and interfaces.

LBYIE3C Cognitive Ergonomics Lab

This is a one-term, three hour per week laboratory class for application of tools and techniques in Cognitive Ergonomics.

IMEMARK Industrial Marketing

The course presents the major concepts and philosophies underlying one of the major business functions, which is marketing. It emphasizes the role of marketing as a link between society’s needs and the industrial firm’s production and financial efforts. The course will focus on Philippine experiences, situations and examples in contrast with other more successful and industrialized countries.

IEOPER3 Operations Research 3
3 units
The course introduces the fundamental concepts of decision theory, game theory, queueing theory, markov processes, stochastic inventory control, and monte-carlo simulation. The course makes use of real world examples in order to demonstrate the applicability of these concepts. The general theme of all of these topics is focusing on capturing uncertainty and risks that affects all decisions in the real world.

SYSENG2 Systems Engineering 2 Lecture
2 units
This is the second of the two-part systems analysis and design course that is meant to support the capstone design project. The second course focuses on solution generation, evaluation, and planning for implementation. It exposes students to creative problem-solving techniques that they can use to generate alternative solutions such as brainstorming, six thinking hats, and random stimulation among others. Tools for evaluating alternatives, costs and risks such as KT decision analysis, Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and Potential Problem Analysis will also be discussed. The last part of the course deals with planning for the implementation of the chosen system.

LBYIE3B Systems Engineering 1 Lab
1 unit
This laboratory course is the first of the series involving a two-term independent group systems study. The students will apply the concepts, tools, techniques, and activities of systems analysis and design such as present system documentation and situation appraisal, and the various tools to be used in each stage.

LBYIE3K System Simulation Lec and Lab
1 unit
This course will primarily tackle the basic concepts needed in constructing a discrete-event simulation (DES) model. It will start with a general introduction to simulation. From this, the focus will then shift to discussions regarding the general principles of a discrete-event simulation model, random variate generation and verifying, validating and analyzing the outputs of DES models. It will also teach students how simulation should actually be carried out or performed by providing them with hands-on experience how to do discrete-event system simulation using MS Excel and a number of simulation software packages.

INFORSY Information Systems
2 units
This Management Information System (INFORSY) course covers the conceptualization, design, and development of an information system (MIS) tailored to the specific requirements of organizations. It shall cover concepts, tools, and techniques in planning, analyzing, designing, programming, and managing information systems. It exposes students to the use of object-oriented analysis and design, a project management book of knowledge, earned value management, and web usability analysis. The topics covered will provide students with the knowledge of how they might use information system components to address Industrial Engineering issues.

LBYIE3F Information Systems Lab
1 unit
This course is the Information System Laboratory (LBYIE3F) component, where students can apply the theories discussed in the INFORSY (Management Information System) lecture course. It exposes students to different case studies, such as evaluating information system solutions using cost-benefit analysis, designing user interfaces using visual basic application (VBA) programming, assessing the usability of application systems using usability principles, and evaluating projects using earned value management. The topics covered will provide students with the technical capability of planning, analyzing, designing, and managing information system components to address Industrial Engineering related issues.

IEMERES Methods of Research for IE

This course introduces the students to the fundamental knowledge of research covering the entire research process including formulating research questions; sampling, measurement, research design, data analysis and writing the research proposal.

LBYIE3E Systems Engineering 2 Lab
1 unit
This is the second part of the capstone design course takes off from the end of the problem analysis. The course requires students to generate and evaluate alternative solutions to the problem identified considering economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and sustainability constraints. After choosing a specific solution, students are required document the new system design and assess its costs, benefits, and risks. An implementation plan is designed to guide the company in implementing the proposed solution.

This course deals with the study of different layout procedures and algorithms. The different layout procedures will be discussed in relation to the flow of products and services within the plant. It will also cover computer aided layout and optimization, material handling principles and design, and warehousing.

PROMGT3 Quality Management Systems
3 units
This major IE course covers the basic principles, concepts, and philosophy of total quality management, statistical process control, process capability, acceptance sampling, reliability theory and maintenance management, ISO 9000, and Six-Sigma, as applied to both manufacturing and service companies.

IEPRODE Product Design
1 unit
This is an introductory course in product design. Lectures include topics on product design framework, product development, quality function deployment, creativity techniques, prototyping, risk, reliability, safety and failure mode and effects analysis, legal and ethical issues in design and intellectual property. The course also relates human limitations to the design of effective products.

LBYIE3G Product Design Lab
1 unit
This course is the laboratory component of Product Design. Activities conducted in this class supplement the theories learned on human centric design, quality function deployment, value engineering and failure mode and effects analysis.

FEAPROJ Project Feasibility
3 units
The course covers the fundamental tools and techniques utilized in preparing project feasibility studies and it includes all aspects of project appraisal (i.e., project cost, market, technical, financial, management organization, social and economic aspects of business ventures and projects). At the end of the course, the students shall be able to gain an understanding and appreciation of evaluating business opportunities/projects of long-term investments and the various methods of appraisal as well as their advantages and pitfalls.

IEOCSAF Occupational Safety and Health for IE
3 units
The course introduces industrial engineers to the field of occupational safety and health (OSH), how jurisprudence developed through the decades leading to the formulation of the OSH Standards that set the Rules and regulatory requirements of industries for their mandatory compliance to safeguard life and limb. Understanding new technology developed from ever-changing industrial landscapes introduces new hazards, risks and threats to the well-being of the working man, leading to new updates, additions, revisions to, and/or expunction of rules from, the OSH Standards. The student is made aware of the administrative, civil and criminal liability for each non-compliance of the Rules in the OSH Standards.

The student will also learn how to identify, mitigate and/or eliminate hazards using proven, universal techniques and practices, made aware of new and upcoming risks and threats at worksites and public places and the development of corrective measures to mitigate/eliminate them.

This course is part-and-parcel of the university’s Service-Learning (SL) Program that requires the student to put into practice his/her newly acquired competencies by conducting hands-on Safety Inspection of a partner organization’s premises.

LBYIE4F System Dynamics Lec and Lab
1 unit
This is a laboratory accompaniment of DYNSYST or System Dynamics. The focus of this course is the application of the concepts and methodology of System Dynamics. This laboratory course covers modeling of influence diagrams, stock-flow diagrams, and mathematical modeling to simulate the dynamics of non-industrial systems. It also covers intervention in a system where policies can be tested as well as the simulation of solutions. Towards this end cases and a term project are required to apply the System Dynamics methodology and tools. The software packages to be used in this laboratory are VENSIM and STELLA.

SUPCHAN Supply Chain Management
3 units
This course deals with the basic concepts in managing the complete flow of materials in a supply chain from suppliers to customers. Overview of the various activities or functional areas along the supply chain will be covered. These include demand management, procurement, inventory management, customer service, distribution and transportation, warehousing, and the like.

This course is the first in a series involving a two-term independent group research study, guided by an adviser of their choice and who specializes in the field of their topic.

PRCISEA IE Industry Immersion
3 units
On-the-Job training will expose the students to the different tasks and responsibilities being assigned to an industrial engineer. This includes exposure to manufacturing companies, service systems, industrial or power plants, research activities, design projects and others.

FDATSCI Foundation of Data Science
2 units
This course covers the introduction to data science and the data science life cycle. The course will be a combination of lectures and hands-on application of concepts using the most used software in the data science field. This course aims to incorporate the students’ knowledge of statistics, data analysis, and computer science in general.
