12. Teaching, Learning, and Assessment Strategies

Teaching and learning strategies include independent study, focused group sharing and discussions, workshops and educational exposure to trends and development in educational leadership through visits to international schools and paper presentation in conferences. Classes are held on regular schedules of lectures and seminars every week in each trimester.

Syllabi and learning plans are based on adult learning principles and incorporate activities suited for adult learners, like student-led seminars where students talk about pre-assigned readings or are expected to actively participate as a discussant on assigned topics or focus questions.

In many of the courses, there is a strong link between theory and practice within specific multi-cultural contexts on educational leadership and management. Students learn application strategies for management, and leadership as when they construct strategic plans and change initiatives for their own respective institutions.

Assessment strategies range from service learning outcomes with reflective journal and integrative papers assigned at the beginning and end of the term.

At the end of the coursework the student must pass the Written Comprehensive Examination (WCE) in four areas: Strategic Planning, Instructional Leadership, Human Behavior, Organizational Culture, and Institutional Development, and Educational Leadership & Management in Educational Institutions.

Also integral in the assessment strategies of the program the student is required to be actively involved in the dissemination of his/her work as a scholar and graduate student. Thus, before taking the final defense, the student must therefore submit evidence of his/her creative/critical involvement and productive scholarship, which can take the form of any of the following:

  • Attendance in local or international conferences/seminars.
  • Published scholarly work in a reputable and refereed international publication.
  • Disseminated research (paper presented in an international conference).

For the doctoral’s dissertation, the student benefits from individual research supervision by a mentor at the department whose interest and expertise or creative-critical practice match the nature, focus, or trajectory of the student’s project.
