Abstract:
-Solvent-free microwave extraction (SFME) is a combination of dry distillation and microwave heating without added any solvent or water. SFME was used to extract the essential oil of turmeric which contains the compound Ar-turmerone, one of the major components that shows medicinal properties. The effects of the different extraction time and temperature on the mg of essential oil and presence of Ar-turmerone in the turmeric essential oil were investigated to determine the optimum conditions. The Central Composite Design was used and it was found that time remains to be the only factor which affects the oil yield of the extract for this study. The optimum conditions were at a temperature of 150 °C and a time of 50 minutes that yielded 411.6 mg oil / g turmeric and 139 mg Ar-turmerone/g turmeric for mg of oil and Ar-turmerone respectively. The physico-chemical properties of the extracted oil obtained at the optimum condition were specific gravity (0.936), refractive index (1.507), acid value (2.762) and ester value (11.05).
