A. Master of Arts in Applied Theology with Specialization in Religious and Values Education

Basic Research Courses: 6 units

Foundations of Applied Theology (APT101M) – 3 units

Basic realities and processes within the framework of the mutual interaction between the Judeo-Christian Tradition and contemporary human experience, the fundamental notions of Revelation and Faith shall be dealt with. The process of “doing theology”, particularly with cultural resources, will be explained and illustrated.


Methods of Applied Research and Statistics – REV526M – 3 units

A study of the fundamentals of behavioral research, research design, types of research, analysis, and interpretation.


Core Courses: 6 units          

Doing Christology in a Cultural Context – REV204M – 3 units

The present-day understanding of the identity and the significance of Jesus is no longer confined to Western philosophical categories. Following the general renewal in theology inspired by Vatican II, various approaches to Christology have been developed. One of these, the cultural approach, seeks to inculturate the Christian Faith in Jesus Christ in the different cultures of peoples. The course first analyses the first disciples’ experience of Jesus in order to ascertain the theological and hermeneutical principles involved in it and to indicate the various stages the experience underwent. Knowledge of these principles and stages will then provide guidance in articulating a “Christology” utilizing local cultural categories.


Foundations of Moral Life with Contemporary Moral Issues – REV671M – 3 units

The course pinpoints and elaborates the changes in moral theology within the Church since Vatican II. The basic themes of Christian moral life such as fundamental option, moral norms, conscience, and sin are discussed considering the cultural context in which they are to be understood. A study of the sources, structures, and dynamics of Christian morality with special focus on modern moral questions in the area of human life, human community, human communication, and human sexuality.

Biblical Studies: OT and NT – REV673M – 3 units

This course critically engages the students to a survey of the different trends in biblical studies. It will familiarize the students with the basic concepts, issues, and methods of biblical exegesis through actual exercises in biblical interpretation.


Psychological Foundation of Education (Foundations of Religious and Values Education) REV5310 – 3 units

Basic concepts of psychological principles as applied to the field of education, theories of learning and personality, social and interpersonal relationships, group work, and leadership in and out of the classroom setting. History and developments of Religious and Values Education in the global and local context.


Contemporary Approaches to Religious and Values Education (REV541M) – 3 units

This course presents a commentary on the valuable sources of Religious Education such as Catechism of the Catholic Church, General Catechetical Directory, and National Catechetical Directory of the Philippines. The commentaries will indicate how the directory is a valuable guide to religious educators with basic principles and approaches to contemporary religious education. It will also address various contexts: primary, secondary, tertiary, and adult education. Contemporary approaches to religious education are applied to a specific area of ministry through service learning or community engagement.


Theology of Signs and Symbols – REV712M – 3 units

A study of the sacraments as saving Christological and ecclesial acts celebrated through symbols and rituals; how they relate to the meanings and values of the Christian community with the interface of anthropology and theology as the locus theologicus.


History of Spirituality and Spirituality for Teachers of Religious and Values Education – REV661M – 3 units

This course presents a history of the various kinds of Christian Spirituality developments from the time of Jesus Christ to the present. A formative approach will be used in this course through examining various traditions, disciplines, and practices in the context of their historical development and contemporary expressions. It also includes the relationship of spirituality to theology and religious education.


Cognate Course/Elective: 3 units               

A Lay Empowered Church: History and Theology – REV203M- 3 units

A historical and systematic study of the theology of the Church from the perspective of the laity who constitute ninety-eight percent of it. The course will focus on the role of the laity in the Church as envisioned by the Second Vatican Council.

B. Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Theology major in Religious and Values Education

 

Core Philosophy: (9 units)

Philosophy of Curriculum Development in Religious Education and Values Education – REV536D – 3 units

A course on current approaches in religious education curriculum from theological and pedagogical perspectives; theories of faith and revelation, language and experience, and principles for evaluating and making curricula in the light of these theories.


Philosophy of Religious Education and Values / Education with Professional Teacher’s Ethics – REV537D -3 units

An examination of the various theories and philosophies regarding religious education with implications for the management of educational programming. Value-philosophers like Scheler and Marcel will be studied along with their ethical theories.


Philosophy and Psychology of Religious Development and Values Formation – REV538D – 3 units

A study of schools of Psychology (Freud, Jung, Maslow, etc.) and their theories regarding

religious development and similar specific theories of Erikson, Kohlberg, and Fowler.


Major Courses: (18 units)

Contemporary Methods of Interpreting the Bible (APT102D) 3 units

An exposition, illustration and critical analysis of the various exegetical methods used in interpreting the Bible in the contemporary context.


Contemporary Issues in Christology (APT212D) 3 units

This course explores critical issues in Christology that are rooted in the relationship between the human and the divine in the person of Jesus Christ. It discusses the old-aged questions on who Jesus is and what he has done. It will examine modern Christological and Soteriological discourses and connect them to the human and the spiritual experiences of people today.


Contemporary Liturgy and Sacraments (APT916D) 3 units

The study of the historical development and acculturation of liturgy; an analysis of the practice of Christian worship in its social and ecclesial context.


Contemporary Moral Theology (APT234D) 3 units

This course initiates a dialogue between the study of major historical texts on Christian discernment and the exploration of concrete cases and moral issues that Christians in various ministries encounter in today’s world.


Program Evaluation and Construction of Instruments for Religious Education and Values Education – REV582P – 3 units

A review of evaluation models with the corresponding strategies for implementation and the principles guiding the construction of instruments.


Research Seminar on Religious and Values Education – REV906D – 3 Units

An evaluative study of different types of studies on religious education and their accompanying methodologies. The output of the course is the first draft of the dissertation proposal to complete the degree.


Cognate/Elective (3 units)

Contemporary Spiritualities – REV232P – 3 units

This course defines spirituality as a field of study, explores the relationship between spiritual praxis and research in spirituality, surveys different contemporary spiritualities, evaluates the notion of a “spiritual classic” and examines issues in the historical study of spirituality.
