A. Master of Arts in Applied Theology with specialization in Formative Counseling and Spiritual Accompaniment

Basic Courses (6 units)        

Foundations of Applied Theology I: Basic Realities and Processes (APT101M) – 3 units

Within the framework of the mutual interaction between the Judeo-Christian Tradition and contemporary human experience, the fundamental notions of Revelation and Faith shall be dealt with. The process of “doing theology,” particularly with cultural resources, will be explained and illustrated.


History of Christian Spirituality (APT605M) – 3 units

This course will present a history of the various kinds of Christian Spirituality developments from the time of Jesus Christ to the present.  A formative approach will be used in this course.


Major Courses (18 units)                 

Techniques of Formative Counseling and Spiritual Accompaniment (APT604M) – 3 units

Formators learn various techniques in formative counseling and spiritual accompaniment. It seeks to help develop the qualities and skills of an effective co-journey-er and spiritual accompany-er.


Assessment/Testing Tools in Formative Counseling & Spiritual Accompaniment

(APT606M) – 3 units

Formative study of the different assessment tools, including standardized tests in formative counseling and spiritual accompaniment. It equips formators with skills to select, administer, score, interpret, and evaluate the formandee for better accompaniment.


Philosophical & Psychological Foundations of Guidance, Formative Counseling and Spiritual Accompaniment (APT610M) – 3 units

Formators understand the schools of philosophy, psychology, sociology, and spirituality in the practice of formative guidance & counseling and spiritual accompaniment.


Formative Group Process and Counseling (APT612M) – 3 units

Formators understand the different kinds of groups, their purpose, development, dynamics, and learn to facilitate a group formative process and counseling. This exposes them to various theories to become effective formative group facilitators and counselors.


Organization, Administration and Supervision of Guidance & Counseling Services, and Program Development (APT607M) – 3 units

Formators learn to organize, administer and supervise a specific guidance and counselling services and do program development for the counselees and directees.


Personality Theories and Abnormal Psychology (APT623M) – 3 units

Formators study the different personality theories of wellness as well as the characteristics of the different psychopathologies. Formators learn to make concrete plans for better accompaniment.


Cognate/Elective (3 units)                

Formative Career Development and Counseling (APT608M) – 3 units

The Formators learn the different career theories and their application in formative decision-making and discernment.


Practicum (3 units)               

Formative Counseling and Spiritual Accompaniment Practicum (APT914M) – 3 units

Formators accomplish a supervised practicum in formative counseling and spiritual accompaniment.


Non-Course requirement before the Written Comprehensive Exam:

  1. At least five (5) sessions of personal-individual counseling (approximately one hour each) from a reputable counseling center.
  2. At least five (5) sessions of personal spiritual accompaniment.

Oral Comprehensive Exam:

REV601W-Formative Counseling, REV804W-Spirituality, REV901W-Scriptures, and REV902W-Moral Theology


 

B. Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Theology with specialization in Formative Counseling and Spiritual Accompaniment (DAPT-FCSA)

Basic Courses: (6 units)

Contemporary Methods of Interpreting the Bible (APT102D) – 3 units

An exposition, illustration and critical analysis of the various exegetical methods used in interpreting the Bible today. It provides students to apply exegetical and hermeneutical interpretation using the narrative approach or narrative criticism combining with other contextual biblical methods and approaches in ways that respond to the urgent needs of the people.


Advanced Research Methods in Formative Counseling and Spiritual Direction (APT906D) – 3 units

The course aims to train formators to do research and communicate their findings professionally. This course focuses on the fundamental principles and techniques of inferential statistics as applied to formative counseling and spiritual accompaniment research. The course covers the definition, data requirements and interpretation of standard statistical analysis.


Major Courses (21 units)                 

Psycho-Spiritual Approaches to Formative Counseling, Psychotherapy and Spiritual Accompaniment (APT321D) – 3 units

Formators make an in-depth study of major theoretical counseling, psychotherapy, and using spiritual accompaniment using the psycho-spiritual approach. Ethical considerations are highlighted in the professional practice of accompaniment.


Advanced Personality Theory and Spirituality (APT322D) – 3 units

Formators explore the development of personality and spirituality using the theoretical and empirical approaches. The socio-cultural aspect of personality in the context of formative counseling and spiritual direction is considered.


Advanced Psychopathology (APT323D) – 3 units

Formators study the characteristics of the different psychopathologies, their etiology, prognosis and treatment. Formators learn to make concrete plans for better accompaniment applying the learned skills in psycho-spiritual approaches.


Assessment Tools/Testing in Formative Counseling and Spiritual Accompaniment (APT324D) – 3 units

Formators learn the different assessment tools, including standardized paper-and-pencil tests used to assess personality, intelligence, and other psycho-spiritual variables useful in formative counseling. Formators are equipped with skills to select, administer, score, interpret, and evaluate these tools.


Advanced Formative Group Process and Formative Counseling (APT325D) – 3 units

Formators are given the opportunity (a) to make a review and survey of the different theories applied in group formative counseling; (b) to experience these theories in a small growth group in class; and (c) to facilitate a small pastoral growth group outside class. Formators learn how to use the Structured Learning Experiences (SLE) and Process-Observation-Analysis (POA) that are important in facilitating groups.


Family Dynamics and Counseling Approaches (APT450D) – 3 units

Formators learn the psycho-spiritual approach to helping both developing and troubled families. It investigates the psychodynamics of family systems, the dysfunctional manifestation of family crises in the socio-cultural setting, and the pastoral opportunities for caring, healing, and growth. Some diagnostic and analytic tools are explored that can be used in planning and implementing formative counseling strategies in resolving family problems.


Advanced Formative Career Counseling (APT451D) – 3 units

Formators learn the current research, theory and practice in formative career counseling. This course allows the formators to examine the different formative career development theories and their use in understanding the individual’s personal and career needs in formation.


Cognate/elective                   

Philosophy and Psychology of Religious Development and Values Formation (APT120D) – 3 units

A study of schools of philosophy and psychology in their theories regarding religious development and values formation. Specifically, the psychological theories of Erikson, Kohlberg, Hall and Fowler vis a vis Filipino culture, Psychology and Philosophical orientations will be explored.


Practicum                 

Formative Counseling and Spiritual Accompaniment Practicum (APT327D) – 3 units

Formators are given the opportunity for group supervision in formative psychotherapy and spiritual accompaniment.


Oral Comprehensive Exam

The students formulate Thesis statements on the area of specialization and will orally defend the research before the panel of examiners. (REV601W, REV804W, REV901W, REV909W)


Dissertation   12 units
