Abstract:
-“Given that the greatest contributing factor to air pollution is the emissions of transportation vehicles, mitigation technologies of these emissions are continuously being developed. Applying the principle of catalytic oxidation, this research is focused on using varying compositions of CuO-CeO2-AC catalyst towards carbon monoxide oxidation to carbon dioxide. Results were obtained using the application of gas chromatography. The catalytic performance of CuO-CeO2-AC prepared by wet impregnation method was measured by its CO conversion and CO2 yield. The weight ratios of CuO-CeO2-AC used were 2-1-97, 5-1-94, 9-1-90, 5-0-95 and 0-1-99. Effect of time and effect of temperature on catalytic activity were studied. The characteristics of each catalyst were also investigated using SEM-EDX, BET, FTIR, TGA and XRD analysis. Based from the results, the average steady state time of the catalysts was 120 minutes. In terms of overall catalytic performance, the catalyst which produced the best results at a reaction temperature of 290°C was 9-1-90 CuO-CeO2-AC with 39% CO conversion and a yield of 0.214 mole of CO2 for every mole of CO. Results showed that increasing the CuO loading leads to an increase in both CO conversion and CO2 yield. Also, the addition of ceria improves the activity. However, CO conversion and CO2 yield for all catalysts were low. Differences in the values of conversion and yield were seen and based from the results, activity was mainly affected by composition, reaction, temperature and the mechanism. Thus, a higher weight ratio for both copper oxide and ceria is recommended to enhance the catalysts activity.”
