Signing of Memorandum of Understanding with Institute of Global Affairs, Kyung Hee University, Korea
The Yuchengco Center President Dr. Trinidad Osteria and Senior Fellow Dr. Tereso Tullao visited Kyung Hee University Institute of Global Affairs in Korea on April 28 to May 1, 2011 to discuss areas of mutual interest for future collaboration. The discussion culminated in the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions encompassing the conduct of collaborative research, organization of academic conferences, publications and exchange of researchers. Themes related to regional economic cooperation and integration, regional security and labor migration will be adopted by the consortium.
Presentation of Paper in the Expert Group Meeting of Asia-Europe Foundation Network for Public Health in Luxembourg
The Asia-Europe Foundation Network for Public Health organized an Expert Group Meeting on Regional Integration and Infectious Diseases on May 18 to 20, 2010 in Luxembourg. The meeting was hosted by the Directorate-General of Health and Consumer Protection of the European Commission. Several papers were presented during the conference such as cross regional integration on surveillance, and detection of emerging infectious diseases, EU vaccines strategy, Asian regional cooperation mechanisms on communicable diseases and pandemic preparedness; health crisis communication and networks; and research and development. Dr. Osteria shared her experiences in coordinating multicountry studies, bridging the gap between research and policy development, and ensuring the quality and comparability of intercountry data on the social aspects of infectious diseases transmission in the Session on Research and Development.
Visiting Scholars Program
Two summer research interns from the Asia-Europe Institute of the University of Malaya presented their research results focusing on the role of media in dealing with two important issues in the Philippines, Islam and the Reproductive Health Bill. This was held on June 8, 2011. Ms. Lee Ling Hooi examined the media presentation of Islamic issues by analyzing the contents of Islamic topics in The Manila Times and Philippine Daily Inquirer. Ms. Lai Jin Pei researched on how the reproductive health bill is presented in mainstream media, which was done by viewing GMA and ANC debates on the reproductive health bill over a period of 1 ½ months (January 1 to February 13, 2011).
In 2010, the Center hosted Mr. Fabian Weiner, a German masteral student of the Asia Europe Institute in Malaysia, as a summer research intern. He looked at the extent of ASEAN regional integration based on the preamble through a survey of students form DLSU, UP and Ateneo and interviewed the ASEAN desk officer of the Department of Foreign Affairs.
Three graduate students of the Asia-Europe Institute of the University of Malaya were based at the Yuchengo Center from May 18 to June 16, 2009 to write their respective research papers: Mr. Ian Fangziaw from Malaysia who researched on trade and investment policies in the APEC region and potential multilateral economic cooperation among the constituent countries; Thao Dinh from Vietnam who examined the Vietnam-China economic relations in the light of the latter’s emergence as an economic, political and military power; and Pipin Sopian from Indonesia who assessed the contribution of student activism to a country’s political development with particular focus on the toppling of the leadership of Suharto in Indonesia and Marcos in the Philippines.
