DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN HISTORY BY RESEARCH (DHISRES)

DLSU offers quality programs, especially Doctoral programs, at the shortest time possible for students. Moreover, the K-12 program of the government as well as the history subjects in the college level require more than just knowledge of particular events in Philippine History but skills and ability to handle primary sources.  The courses offered by the program are geared towards understanding primary and secondary documents in a proper perspective which lead to the reconstruction of events in Philippine History. The doctoral program in history is primarily a research program where graduate students are required to formally present their research output to the academic community. The Doctor of Philosophy in History (Ph.D. in History by Research) is an advanced Ph.D. program for candidates with demonstrated capacity for advanced historical research. The program encourages dissertations in regional and comparative history.

Course Requirements

Graduate Seminar 1 and 2:                     6 units 

Dissertation Writing 1-7*:                      42 units 

Written Comprehensive Examinations (To be taken prior to the Dissertation Defense): 

On the historical method and multi-/interdisciplinary research and how these apply to the planned dissertation

At least one publication in a refereed and abstracted/indexed journal or juried creative work. 

Dissertation:                                         12 units 

TOTAL UNITS:                                  60 units

* The student may enroll in Dissertation Writing (3 to15) for as long as he/she has not finished the doctoral dissertation.

 

First Year

On the first year, the student will engage in trainings on the historical method (particularly on archival research, fieldwork, oral history) and multi-/interdisciplinary research, to be provided by the DLSU Department of History or other institutions of higher learning in the Philippines and the world. These kinds of trainings will be determined by the Research Supervisor primarily considering the intended line of research and specialization of the student.

A developmental plan, based on the needs assessment of the student must be accomplished by the student and approved by the Research Supervisor and Research Co-Supervisor. The student must complete a total number of 42 hours of training per term, for the first two terms.

On the third term of the first year, the student will enroll in Dissertation Writing 1. The student shall submit a dissertation proposal to the Research Supervisor, who will then endorse it for comments of the Research Co-Supervisor. As soon as they agree that the proposal is suitable for defense, the Research Supervisor writes to the Graduate Program Coordinator of the Department of History to request that a panel be convened for the dissertation proposal defense. The panel will be composed of five members: (i) Research Supervisor, (ii) Research Co-Supervisor, (iii) three senior professors of the Department of History or any academic department within the university who has faculty experts in the field of the student’s research.

The Department Graduate Committee may require the applicant to take the two (2) core courses – (1) Theories and Approaches in History and (ii) The Practice and Writing of History which are necessary for the completion of the research program. These core courses must be completed during the first year.

At the end of the first year, the student is expected to submit the following: (i) self-assessment report and (ii) progress report highlighting the major accomplishments during the first year. These documents will be reviewed by the Department Graduate Board who will make the necessary recommendations and decisions.

 

Second Year

On the second year, the student will work closely with the Research Supervisor and Research Co- Supervisor, while enrolled in Dissertation Writing 2. The student shall devote 84 hours of research per term, divided into the following: directed research, independent research, attendance to seminars and/or academic conferences, regular consultation with Research Supervisor, Research Co-Supervisor and/or specialist in one area of research.

The outputs for each term are the drafts for the different chapters of the proposed dissertation. The student, Research Supervisor and Research Co-Supervisor shall agree on a work plan with specific outputs.

The student is also expected to have published one single-authored scholarly article (a part of his/her research) in a reputable, refereed journal in the Philippines or abroad by the end of the second year.

The student will submit the following at the end of the second year: (i) self-assessment report and (ii) progress report highlighting the major accomplishments during the second year. These documents will be deliberated on by the Department Graduate Board who will recommend the necessary actions or decisions.

Third Year

On the second week of the first term, the student shall submit the first draft of the dissertation to his/her Research Supervisor and Research Co-Supervisor, who shall thoroughly review it. The draft, containing substantial comments and suggestions must be returned to the student after three to four weeks. The student will work on a second draft within a reasonable period of time. This second draft will be deliberated upon during a meeting amongst the three of them. The student will be given ample time to write the third draft.

During the second week of the second term, the student shall submit the third draft of the dissertation to his/her Research Supervisor and Research Co-Supervisor, who shall thoroughly review it to ensure that their suggestions on the second draft have been taken into consideration by the student in writing the third draft. After two weeks, they will agree if the draft is suitable to be sent to three panel members (three senior professors of the Department of History or any academic department within the university who has faculty experts in the field of the student’s research) who will initially screen the third draft of the dissertation. The three panel members must return the third draft after three to four weeks. Upon receipt of the corrected drafts from these three panel members, the Research Supervisor and the student will deliberate on how to best address all these comments. The fourth draft will be written by the student for the rest of the term.

The student is also expected to present his/her research findings to an international or national fora until the end of the third year.

The panel that will screen the dissertation will be composed of the following: (i) Research Supervisor,

(ii) Research Co-Supervisor, (iii) three senior professors of the Department of History or any academic department within the university who has faculty experts in the field of the student’s research.

The dissertation will be also be sent to two (2) external reviewers (defined as academics outside De La   Salle University).

The five-member panel and the two external reviewers will form a collegial body to assess the dissertation. They may pass the dissertation with no revisions, pass it subject to revisions, or fail it outright. Failing dissertations must be revised and subjected to a second external review process.

Fourth to Fifth Year

The student may enroll in Dissertation Writing (3 to15) for as long as he/she has not finished the doctoral   dissertation.
