A commonplace book is a collection of aphorisms, maxims, proverbs, parables, quotations, ambiguities, and amphiboles—nuggets of language that carry considerable weight…. Each commonplace book is necessarily unique, reflecting the individual sensibility of the compiler who personally selects every entry. There are many variants, each of which is distinctive, personal, and often peculiar.
Born in New Orleans, JOSEPH K. PERLOFF received his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 1951. He was a Fulbright Fellow at the Institute of Cardiology in London and was Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics as well as Chief of the Section of Cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1977, Dr. Perloff was awarded an endowed chair as the Streisand/American Heart Association Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics. He established the premier UCLA Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center, which evolved into the Ahmanson/UCLA Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center following a major endowment from the Ahmanson Foundation.
Dr. Perloff has enjoyed worldwide acclaim as a visiting professor and is the recipient of numerous national and international awards and honors, such as the UCLA Award of Extraordinary Merit and the American College of Cardiology’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. He is also the author of hundreds of publications including the definitive Clinical Recognition of Congenital Heart Disease, 6th edition; Congenital Heart Disease in Adults, 3rd edition; and the classic Physical Examination of the Heart and Circulation.
