Workshop on Modelling the Economic Impact of Disasters: Static and Dynamic Analysis

The De La Salle University – Angelo King Institute (DLSU-AKI), in partnership with The OML Center, conducted a workshop on modelling the economic impact of natural disasters last January 20 at Diamond Hotel. This workshop provided an introduction to the theoretical foundations of inoperability input-output modelling and dynamic inoperability input-output modelling along with a hands-on demonstration of the web-based freeware, Disaster Risk Estimation and Analysis using Leontief Models (Disaster-R.E.A.L.M.). Lectures were delivered by DLSU Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation Dr. Raymond Tan and DLSU School of Economics Associate Professor Dr. Krista Danielle Yu. Participants actively engaged in case study discussions facilitated by DLSU-AKI Director Dr. Tereso Tullao Jr. Dr. Caesar Cororaton, a research fellow of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and visiting professor at DLSU, discussed future prospects in disaster risk analysis using other computational tools. Workshop participants included representatives from government agencies such as Department of Agriculture, PHILVOLCS, PAGASA, Department of Energy, Department of Public Works and Highways, local government units of the City of Manila, Quezon City and the municipality of Orani, Bataan and Rosario, Batangas, researchers from the OML Center and the Asian Development Bank, graduate students and faculty of DLSU, University of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines Los Baños and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines among others.
