De La Salle University Environmental Conservation Organization or DLSU ECO held its “ECO-Likasan: Ocean and Solid Waste Managementย Webinar”ย last February 4, 2022 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm via Zoom. DLSU ECO is an official student organization of De La Salle University whose mission is to be the forerunner of spreading data-driven environmental awareness and awaken the passion for environment conservation among members of the Lasallian community especiallyย the undergraduate students.

The speakers for the webinar were Dr. Eric Punzalan of the newly established Aquatic Science Group of theย Department of Chemistry,ย College of Science of De La Salle University and Mr. Reodel Masilungan who is in charge of the IEC (Information, Education and Communication) of the Campus Sustainability Office of De La Salle University. Dr. Punzalan’s topic was on “Solid Waste, Waste Management and the Ocean” while Mr. Masilungan’sย topic was on theย Ban on Single Use Plastics on Campus”.

Dr. Punzalan’s talk tackled the amount of solid waste that goes into the oceans and how garbage affects the oceans especially plastics. Mr. Masilungan’s talk tackled on howย the Ban on Single Use Plastics in De La Salle University came about and the amount of solid waste the university generates inย a day in Manila Campus alone.

Both Dr. Puzalan and Mr. Masilungan were asked questions after their presentations, one of which is one the advice the both could give to lessen the impact of solid waste to the oceans. Both answered that eliminating solid waste at its source or at home is a start. Also, both mentioned the strict compliance of Republic Act 9003 also known as theย โ€œEcological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.โ€ Also, both ended by encouraging the participants to do their share in preventing solid waste, specifically plastics.ย
