The First National Conference in Religious Education and Catechesis

“The Church of the Poor: Insights for Catechesis and Religious Education”

DLSU Manila, Philippines

Twenty years after PCP II, significant issues have emerged and questions have been raised in relation to the implementation of the envisioned image of the Philippine Church as Church of the Poor.  These and other inquiries carry upon it certain implications for religious education and catechesis in the Philippines. The conference wishes to address relevant issues and concerns with respect to religious education and the conduct of catechesis in the Philippines. The first conference in Religious Education and Catechesis is organized by the Theology and Religious Education Department of DLSU Manila, Philippines on April 27-28, 2012. The conference will focus on the following areas of inquiry:

  • The issues and challenges confronting the current conduct of Catechesis and Religious Education in response to an articulation of the Philippine church as “Church of the Poor”
  • Descriptions of the current approaches and programs between the local churches and stakeholders in Religious Education and Catechesis and
  • Presentation of new discourses relevant towards a new articulation of the Philippine Church as “Church of the Poor”.

Hence, participants from the different regions are invited to be part of this national academic gathering. Given these objectives, the conference shall provide participants with opportunities to attend or take part in the academic discussions on the following clusters (Themes):

Cluster 1: Religious Education and Catechesis for the Church of the Poor:
current issues

 

  1. Perspectives in Religious Education: Issues confronting the Philippine Church as “Church of the Poor”
  2. Theological discourse and challenges on Church as Church of the poor
Cluster 2: Religious Education and being “Church of the Poor”
  1. The Church of the Poor, Tasks and possibilities for Religious Education today
  2. The Catechist as Educator: Roles and Challenges for the “Church of the Poor”
Cluster 3: The witness of being “Church of the Poor”
  1. Practices, evidences, programs that demonstrated the successful implementation of the PCP II vision
  2. Areas of cooperation between educational institutions, government and the local churches in the context of the PCP II vision
  3. The current state of cooperation/witness between churches (Christian and non-Christian) in the Philippines: pastoral and theological issues
Cluster 4: The Challenges towards/ of Catechesis in the Philippines
  1. Inquiry on Church-based practices that describes the link between catechesis and Church of the Poor b. New modes or ways of doing catechesis in the Philippines today
  2. New modes or ways of doing catechesis in the Philippines today

Considering the religious significance of this event, the Clergy, Religious educators, administrators, Pastoral workers, catechists are invited to take part in this event through the payment of the conference fee of PHP 500.00 payable to:

    De La Salle University Manila through Bank deposit – under the account name: “De La Salle University” and UCPB Savings Account no. 120-1147119.

Once the deposit is made, NO REFUND for fees will be entertained. The participant is encouraged to scan the copy of the bank receipt and send to the organizers via email (through anyone of the emails indicated here). The deadline of payment is extended until February 2012. After paying the amount, the participant SHOULD EMAIL the organizers immediately so that your name will be included in the conference headcount. The participant should bring the original copy of the bank receipt on the opening day of the conference upon registration. Upon registration, the participant may claim the “Official Receipt” for the conference fee. The participant will also receive a simple kit which includes a copy containing the conference schedule and program, and extended abstracts of the proponents.

The Registration Fee covers access to the plenary and parallel sessions, and certificate. The basis of conference participation and registration is payment of conference fee and attendance in the plenary and parallel session of choice.

The extended abstract must be sent via email (through any of the emails indicated above) and should be addressed to:

The Conference Convenors

The extended abstract should include the following details:

  1. The aim of study and fundamental research questions involved in study
  2. b. Data to be used and methods employed for study c. The specific contribution which the paper can make towards knowledge in general and the Philippine Church in particular

The abstract submission must not exceed 2 pages in single space using the times new Roman” font (size 12) and should include the following information (in the first page):

After submission of the extended abstract, the paper will be reviewed by peer evaluators and the proponent will be notified by the convenors through an official letter of acceptance via email. After the notification is made, the proponent is asked to pay the conference fee of PHP 3, 000.00 payable to: De La Salle University Manila. The Registration Fee covers access to the plenary and parallel sessions, food (Lunch & snacks), conference kit and certificate. The basis of conference participation and registration is payment of conference fee, the acceptance of the extended abstract and the actual presentation of the paper (in a shorter form) during the conference day itself.  The basis of participation is NOT only the acceptance of the extended abstract. The manner of paying the conference fee maybe done in either of the following options:

Option A

Through Bank deposit – under the account name: “De La Salle University” and UCPB Savings Account no. 120-1147119. Check payments should be done AFTER the “Letter of Acceptance” is received by the proponent. The deadline for check payments is December 15, 2012. Once the deposit is made, NO REFUND for fees will be entertained. The participant is asked to scan the copy of the bank receipt and send to the organizers via email (through anyone of the emails indicated here). The participant should bring the original copy of the bank receipt on the opening day of the conference upon registration. Upon registration, the participant may claim the “Official Receipt” for the conference fee. The participant will also receive a conference kit which includes a copy containing the conference schedule and program, full paper (whenever possible) and extended abstracts of the proponents. The kit will also include food stubs which shall be surrendered upon claiming food.

Option B

Pay the amount of P 3,000.00 in CASH upon registration during the conference day itself. This option is only good for those who are attending the conference but not presenting any paper. Paper presenters are advised to take option A so that their name is included in the line-up of parallel sessions. For this option the participant shall have already made earlier communications with the organizers regarding his/her intention to participate.

Those who are presenting papers are expected to submit his/her paper by February 28, 2012 via email (indicated here) to anyone of the convenors. Failure of the proponent to submit his/her paper may jeopardize the inclusion of his/her name in the schedule of sessions.  Towards the end of the conference, the paper presentor/ conference participant will receive a certificate of participation (if participants only) or certificate of recognition (if paper presentor).
