MARK ANGELO O. BALENDRES, PhD

Mark Angelo Balendres is a faculty of the Department of Biology under the College of Science at De La Salle University (DLSU). Dr. Balendres received his Ph.D. degree in Agricultural Science (Plant Pathology) from the University of Tasmania, Australia (2017), and his BSc degree in Agriculture major in Plant Pathology from Central Mindanao University (Cum laude). Dr. Balendres joined the University of the Philippines Los Baños (2017-2022) as a University Researcher. He led numerous research projects supported by various funding agencies worth more than 40 million pesos of research grants. Dr. Balendres’ research and extension activities include elucidating the etiology and epidemiology of plant diseases, developing plant disease diagnostic and screening protocols, developing sustainable disease management strategies, and raising awareness of the importance of plant diseases to various stakeholders (and the public). He and his team were responsible for the many new country reports of plant pathogens and their associated plant diseases. Dr. Balendres has served as editor of several journals, a journal peer reviewer for more than 15 international journals, and a technical reviewer for several funding agencies. Dr. Balendres has published books and book chapters, produced over 50 scientific papers in various international journals, and presented/co-presented more than 100 scientific conference papers. Dr. Balendres is affiliated with the Philippine Phytopathological Society Inc. (former Vice President), the American Phytopathological Society, the Australasian Plant Pathological Society, the International Society of Root Research, National Research Council of the Philippines, and the PhilFruits Association Inc. Dr. Balendres is a Fellow of the Global Young Academy (2022-2027). He served as the DOST-NRCP Research and Development Leader of Mindoro State University. Dr. Balendres is a recipient of the Gerardo O. Ocfemia Outstanding Plant Pathologist Award (Research) in 2019, the UPLB Outstanding Researcher Award (Senior Category for Natural Sciences) in 2021, and, most recently, the 2022 Pest Management Award by the Pest Management Council of the Philippines.
