MA. LUISA D. ENRIQUEZ, PhD

Ma. Luisa D. Enriquez is a professorial lecturer at the Biology Department, De La Salle University. She earned her Bachelor of Science (Pre Med) degree, Cum Laude, from La Salle College Bacolod (now University of St. La Salle). She obtained her Master of Science in Biology and Doctor of Philosophy in Zoology degrees from the University of the Philippines Diliman. She was awarded as the Most Outstanding PhD graduate of the Institute of Biology, UP-D upon graduation. She did her post graduate studies in Cytogenetics and fellowship in Molecular Cytogenetics at the Department of Molecular Cytogenetics, Medical Research Institute, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Tokyo, Japan under the MONBUSHO (now MONBUKAGAKUSHO) Research Scholarship and the Association of International Education in Japan (AIEJ) fellowship programs respectively. The teaching career of Dr. Enriquez at DLSU spans more than four decades (since 1976). She served as the Director of the Center for Natural Science and Environmental Research (CENSER) from 2004-2016. Today, she continues to teach in the graduate school of the Department of Biology and in the MS Molecular Medicine program of St. Luke’s College of Medicine. She continues to be active in research at DLSU having been granted the “Scientist in Residence” status. Dr. Enriquez is also a consultant-scientist at the Molecular Cytogenetics Laboratory of the Research and Biotechnology, St. Luke’s Medical Center (SLMC); a position she held since 1995. Her current researches are on biomolecular markers in various cancers like colorectal, breast, lung and leukemia. Quite recently she has expanded her research to include the anti-cancer properties of secondary metabolites in selected fruits and vegetables. In recognition to her dedication in teaching, and research as well as in pioneering the field of cytogenetics in the diagnosis of genetic diseases in the country, she was awarded the Centennial Legacy Award, Leadership in Profession by La Consolacion College, Bacolod, her high school alma mater, Dr. Enriquez is the current chair of the Research Utilization Committee of the Metro Manila Health Research and Development Consortium (MMHRDC) and the head of the Translational Research Unit of the Human Cancer Biobank of SLMC.
