Rene Escalante is a Professor of History and the current Chair of the Department of History of De La Salle University. He earned his baccalaureate and master’s degree in philosophy from St. Camillus College Seminary and Ateneo de Manila University respectively. In 2001, University of the Philippines-Diliman conferred on him a Ph.D. degree in History. In 2003, DLSU sent him to Lincoln Memorial University in Tennessee as an exchange professor. He was elected Chair of the National Committee on Historical Research of the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts (2007-2009) and appointed member of the CHED Technical Panel on history (2015-2016. In 2010, President Benigno Aquino appointed him Commissioner of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. He also received grants from international agencies like Sumitomo Foundation of Japan, (2002-2003), Philippine Young Scholar Grant given by the International Institute of Asian Studies, University of Leiden, The Netherlands (2004) and a Research Grant from the Ministry of Education Culture and Sports of Spain. (2004). The three books that he published are The American Friar Lands Policy: Its Framers, Context and Beneficiaries (2002); The Bearer of Pax Americana: The Philippine Career of William H. Taft (2007) and History of Hacienda de Imus, 1590-1910 (2013). He has many other articles published in reputable local and international journals.
