Teacher Certificate Program

The Teacher Certificate Program (TCP) provides non-education degree holders with an understanding of the nature, cognitive, socio-emotional and physical characteristics of children who need appropriate general education programs.  The program further equips students with appropriate educational delivery modes and approaches necessary in handling children in general education programs.  TCP aims to develop among its students the necessary skills in teaching children in the regular schools and acquire basic skills in handling learners.

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES

Graduates of Teacher Certificate Program are expected to possess the following Lasallian attributes, namely:

ELGA 1: Creative and Critical Thinker

  • Acquire and apply sound knowledge and understanding of teaching strategies and learning principles to their teaching.
  • Achieve professional competence in evidence-based, theoretically grounded pedagogy, course design, instruction and assessment.

ELGA2: Effective Communicator

  • Demonstrate effective communication skills to nurture supportive learning environment and productive relationship with students, families, and the larger community
  • Articulate and evaluate their assumptions and beliefs about teaching and learning
  • Articulate ideas clearly and confidently during class sessions, presentations, reports, and other types of tasks and situations.

ELGA3: Reflective Life-long Learner

  • Engage in reflective practice for professional growth and examine schooling
  • Acquire and apply knowledge and skills through self-directed and collaborative learning activities and projects useful in real-life situations and contexts.

ELGA4: Service-driven Citizen

  • Help in nation-building through the production of instructional materials, assessment tools and other related outputs
  • Design, develop and implement engaging and effective learning experiences.
  • Exhibit awareness and openness to education trends that will contribute to effective instruction.

ELGA5: Innovator and Constant Seeker of Improvement

  • Demonstrate resourcefulness in designing, developing and implementing creative, engaging and effective learning experiences
  • Exhibit awareness and openness to educational trends that will contribute to effective instruction.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS 

The Teacher Certificate Program (TCP), which offers education courses at the undergraduate level has for its clientele non-education bachelor’s degree holders.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Theory and Concept Courses  6 units
Methods and Strategies Courses 12 units
Experiential Learning Courses (EL1 &EL2)  6 units
Practice Teaching*  6 units
Total 30 units

* Students with at least 2 years of full-time teaching experience will no longer be required to take the practice teaching course (TCP023C). When securing the certificate for TCP, students in this category are required to submit a certification of teaching experience from the school employer to the Department of Educational Leadership and Management and to the Office of the University Registrar. Students who wish to include Practicum in their official transcript of records must enroll in Practicum.

 

THEORY AND CONCEPT COURSES (6 units)

TCP4206   THE TEACHING PROFESSION (3 units)
The course deals with the teacher as an individual, classroom teacher, community teacher and global teacher. It emphasizes professionalization to cover teacher’s status and levels of professional rewards and professionalism to improve competencies and literacy development.

TCP4207   FACILITATING LEARNING (3 units)
This is a 3-unit course on contemporary theories and research on the cognitive, metacognitive, motivational, socio-cultural, and individual differences, which are factors in the acquisition of knowledge. The exploration and discussion of these theories and research will focus on how these apply to the Philippine, regional, local, and personal experiences.

 

METHODS AND STRATEGIES COURSES (12 units)

TCP4208   PRINCIPLES OF TEACHING (3 units)
The course introduces prospective elementary and secondary teachers with knowledge and understanding of the subject area which include foundation disciplines, structural components, models of teaching, and assessment strategies. These will provide the students with the theoretical underpinnings in teaching.

TCP4209   ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT LEARNING (3 units)
This course is designed to equip future educators with conceptual and technical skills that will enable them to effectively assess authentic students’ learning and properly evaluate educational outcomes. It focuses on the development and utilization of alternative forms of assessment to improve the teaching learning process.

TCP4011   EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY (3 units)
This is designed to introduce information and communication technologies to facilitate and foster meaningful and effective learning. Students are expected to demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature, application and production of the various types of educational technologies. The course will likewise focus both on developing teacher support materials and the production of technology-based outputs.

TCP4020   CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT (3 units)
This course covers concepts, foundations, principles, and emerging trends and issues of the Philippine curriculum influenced by global changes. The following concepts that will be studied in detail are curriculum approaches, types and components of curriculum, levels of decision-making, curriculum designs, curriculum models and frameworks, as well as the different phases of curriculum development.

In this course, students will analyze the enabling factors that influence or trigger the changes that the Philippine curriculum has undergone including the process of developing, designing, and implementing the curriculum. The students’ learning experiences in this course will culminate with their engagement in a micro-curriculum plan project.

 

 

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING COURSES (12 units)

TCP4021    FIELD STUDY 1: EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING 1 (EL 1, 3 units)
This 3-unit course is composed of the following: Principles of Teaching, Facilitating Learning, and Assessment of Student Learning. EL 1 is designed to conduct the following: (1) examine the application of teaching theories and principles in the learning environment; (2) verify the behavior of the child in the actual learning environment ; (3) require them to recognize feasible approaches to facilitate learning taking into account the learner’s different phases of development; and (4) allow the students to have hands-on experiences in selecting, constructing, and evaluating authentic and alternative assessment tools used in the learning environment based on the principles of testing.

TCP4022   FIELD STUDY 2: EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING 2 (EL 2, 3 units)
This 3-unit course is composed of the following: Curriculum Development, Educational Technology and the Teaching Profession. EL 2 is designed to conduct the following: (1) analyze and plan a curriculum that is contextually relevant and based on the principles of effective teaching and learning; (2) enrich the students’ experiences in developing and utilizing appropriate technology to facilitate learning; and (3) provide a wide array of opportunities for self-reflection that would prepare one to become a teacher.

 

PRACTICE TEACHING (6 units)

TCP023C   PRACTICE TEACHING (6 units)
Practice Teaching is a 6-unit course offered to those who have completed all Field Study courses. It is part of the Experiential Learning courses of the new teacher education curriculum which gives prospective teachers the chance to experience life in an actual learning environment.
