MA. CELESTE B. HILARIO, PhD

Maria Celeste N. Banaticla-Hilario earned her PhD in Biosystematics from Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands. She obtained both her Bachelor’s degree in Biology (Major in Systematics) and Master of Science degree (Major in Botany) from the University of the Philippines Los Baños. She co-wrote a book on Philippine woody forest vines and their commercial uses. In her master’s thesis, she studied the changes in composition, distribution and vegetation structure of pteridophytes (fern and fern allies) along the slope of Mt. Banahaw de Lucban. Her PhD project focused on the ecogeography of Asia-pacific wild rice species (Oryza spp.). She spent 18 years working on the taxonomy and conservation of wild rice species, and produced several publications related to Oryza biosystematics and ex situ conservation. She continues to mentor students in the field of biosystematics,fFloristics, biodiversity and conservation
