Solid State Physics

The Solid State Physics Research Group offers undergraduate and graduate students in experimental and theoretical physics and provides a broad understanding of rigid matter but not limited to solids through quantum mechanics, crystallography, electromagnetism, and metallurgy. A branch in condense matter physics, the Solid State Physics research group studies how the large scale properties of solid materials result from their atomic-scale properties, we call nanomaterials. Solid-state physics forms the theoretical basis of materials science. Our group has direct applications in nanomaterials, conducting polymers, solar technology, gas sensor, biomaterials, and other smart and functional materials. Researchers in the Solid State Physics begin with a background in basic chemistry, mathematics, and physics — the foundation for broad-based materials properties, processing, and applications courses. Our group also provides technical support for companies and universities involved in the preparation and characterization of new materials, failure analysis of commercial products either manufactured locally and abroad. We also provide exclusive training for students and industry who intends to learn failure analysis, high vacuum technology, and different characterization techniques. Moreover, the Solid State Physics Laboratory recommends excellent researchers who will be working with research laboratories abroad.
Students who intend to join the research group are exposed to specialized courses in the following areas: Semiconductors, Superconductivity, Conducting Polymers, Biomaterials, Nanomaterials, and Other Smart and Functional Materials.
The solid state physics research group is involved in the fabrication and characterization of semiconductor bulk, thin films, and nanomaterials. Study its properties and determine its functionality.
Among the research thrusts of the conductive polymer research group includes the development of facilities for synthesizing and characterizing conductive polymers. They also conduct basic and applied research leading to the fabrication of conductive polymer based devices.
The personnel and laboratory is equipped with the knowledge and expertise in the development of new techniques in the preparation and characterization of the said materials. Moreover, the laboratory is a center for conducting surface, thermal, and electronic characterization sample tests prepared by other universities and the industry as well. The Research group is at present involved in the preparation and characterization of Biomaterials, Conducting Polymers, Nanomaterials, and other Smart and Functional Materials.
The Solid State Physics Research Group maintains a state-of-the-art laboratory facility that provide students with hands-on training in materials synthesis, processing, and characterization.
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
The Solid State Physics Research Group is in-charge of the JEOL 5310 scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with secondary and backscatter electron detectors. The said SEM is also equipped with an AMETEK EDAX ELEMENT Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) System. The instrument operates at high vacuum and has a large specimen chamber and sample stage to examine specimens. Micrographs are taken with the SemAfore software while elemental analysis (point analysis, line analysis, or elemental mapping) is obtained using APEX software.
Gold Coater
The Solid State Physics Laboratory is also in charge of the gold coating equipment. Biological and other non-conducting materials are coated with gold using a JEOL JFC-1200 Fine Coater.
Thermionics High Vacuum System
The Solid State Physics Research Group has Thermionics high vacuum system with a rotary and turbo molecular pump for evacuating glass tubes to very low pressures for nanomaterials synthesis.
X-RAY Diffractormeter (XRD)
The Solid State Physics Research Group is in charge of the PHYWE X-ray diffraction equipment that is used to determine the identity of crystalline solids based on their crystal structure.
Ultrasound Equipment
The lab is in charge of a GAMPT-Scan echoscope that is used for ultrasound investigations. The accompanying AScan software is used for measured data analysis.
Furnace
The Lab also has a Thermolyne 21100 Horizontal Tube Furnace, a Protherm PTF14-50-250 Furnace, and a Fischer Scientific Box Furnace.
Hotplate and Stirrer
The lab has a Suntex Sh-301A Hotplate and Stirrer.
Ultrasonic Cleaner
The lab is also in-charge of the Branson DHA1000-6E Ultrasonic Cleaner.
Source Measure Unit (SMU)
The lab houses a Keithley 2450EC SourceMeter Source Measure Unit that has the capabilities of I-V systems, curve tracers, and analyzers. The said equipment is suitable for characterizing the electrical properties of nano-scale materials and devises, semiconductors, and small-geometry and low-power devices.
Potentiostat
An SRS EC301 is also available in the Solid State Physics laboratory.
Glass Blowing Facility
The Solid State Physics Laboratory has a glass blowing facility for developing glass chambers, reactors, diffusion pumps, and other set-up that involves glasswares.
