Dr. Villamil is an Associate Professorial Lecturer at the School of Economics at De La Salle University. Prior to this he was Chairman of the Economics Department and the founding Dean of the School of Economics.

Dr. Villamil teach basic economics at the graduate level at the RVR College of Business, at the undergraduate level at the School of Economics, and at the senior high school level at the Integrated School. He also teaches Labor Economics and Public Finance at the undergraduate level. He provides thesis advise to both graduate and undergraduate students of the School of Economics.

He is a member of the Executive Board and Treasurer of the Human Development Network, a non-stock, non-profit organization whose mission is to propagate and mainstream the concept of sustainable human development through research and advocacy. The organization publishes biennially, the Philippine Human Development Report and the Philippine Human Development Index. He was former President of the Philippine Economic Society.

Research Interest

Dr. Villamil’s research is on international outmigration and migrant remittances in the Philippines. In particular, He is updating stylized facts about outmigration (characteristics of migrants, destination, and remittances) and their development over time. He is testing alternative hypotheses regarding the motivations to migrate and the factors determining the volume of remittances. He is also looking at the macroeconomic impact of migrant remittances on the Philippine economy.

Dr. Villamil is also working on non-tariff measures for selected agricultural commodities, development of a competitive neutrality framework for energy, utilities and communications sectors, public-private partnership (PPP) by local governments in agriculture, and digital governance projects.
