travelLight Rail Transit (LRT)

LRT1 travels along Taft Avenue. The train operates from 5am to 10pm on weekdays, and 5am to 9:30pm on weekends and holidays. The fare ranges from Php12 to Php20, depending on the number of stations travelled. For those who take the train regularly, it would be convenient to purchase a stored-value ticket, which contains Php100 valid for six months. There is a last ride bonus, wherein theticket would still be valid for one last ride even if the remaining credit is less than the minimum fare. The train gets crowded on rush hours or the peak hours, around 6am to 9am, and 5pm to 7pm. CCTV cameras are placed in the stations to monitor the passengers.

Metro Rail Transit (MRT)

MRT, which travels through EDSA, operates from 5:30am to 11pm both on weekends and weekdays. Holiday schedules vary and are usually posted on stations for notice. Peak hours are 6am to 9am, and 4pm to 7pm. The fare ranges from Php10 to Php15. Stored-value cards for Php100 are also available for use, and would expire at the end of the sixth month from the date of purchase. Last ride bonus for stored-value cards is also observed. The stations provide CCTV monitoring systems for surveillance purposes.

The basic fare for jeepneys is at Php8, but it would vary depending on the distance travelled. Students get to enjoy student discounts on weekdays which is at Php7 minimum fare.

Taxicabs of the Philippines are one of the modes of transportation in the country. They are regulated by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and by the Land Transportation Office (LTO). The taxicabs there vary from models and uses. Most taxicabs have yellow colored license plates, taxi signs, LTFRB Registration number, and taximeter, which is mandatory in every cab. Fares would depend upon the distance travelled. The maximum capacity of a cab is five persons, including the driver.

Air-conditioned and "regular" buses cover all the major routes in Metro Manila. Like jeepneys, most often they do not have specific unloading areas except along EDSA. Thus, a passenger must either press the stop button of the bus or get the attention of the bus conductor by saying "para" aloud if he or she would like to get off at a particular spot.

These are improvised motorcycle vehicles with a side-cart good for two to four passengers. Tricycles are available in specific points in Metro Manila. Their routes are only limited to a specific town or area.

·         Transportation Fares and Student Rates

Fares of these public transports change from time to time relative to oil prices. Before riding any of these conveyances, it is good to ask a Filipino friend of the prevailing fares.

In the Philippines, students with school ID have special fare discounts. Minimum discounted fare for students in Jeppneys is Php7 and taxi/cab flag down rate is Php40 (as of May 2014). These fares vary depending on the distance traveled.
