E-mail Security: Digital Signatures

A digital signature is generated by your email software and your private key, working together. These electronic keys are clever: your message’s signature can only have been generated by your private key, and it works according to internet standards (either SMIME or PGP), so the sending and receiving software can be different.

The SMIME standard is supported by Netscape Messenger/Mozilla/Thunderbird, and Outlook Web Access.

Web Site Security: Phishing Scams

On the Internet, phishing (sometimes called carding or brand spoofing) is a scam where the perpetrator sends out legitimate-looking e-mails appearing to come from some of the Web’s biggest sites, including eBay, PayPal, MSN, Yahoo, BestBuy, and America Online, in an effort to phish (prounounced “fish”) for personal and financial information from the recipient.

How can you avoid phishing scams?

  • NEVER respond to personal information requests through e-mail.
  • Visit web sites by typing the URL in the address bar.
  • Always check to make sure the web site uses encryption.
  • Check your credit card and bank statements regularly.
  • Report suspected abuse to proper authorities.
