COSCA Partners with DLSP for Service-Learning Institutionalization in La Salle Schools

Last July 14, 2021, a webinar on Service-Learning (S-L), Roles of Faculty Members and Social Action Office in promoting the electronic SL (e-SL), and UNISERVITATE subgrant opportunities for De La Salle Philippines (DLSP) tertiary schools was held. Organized by DLSP, it was attended by around 70 faculty members, social action office personnel, and administrators of member schools. COSCA’s Mr. Jimi Caldea, Mr. Neil Oliver Penullar, and Ms. Marietta Guanzon served as resource persons.

Mr. Jimi Caldea, S-L specialist, said that the adaptation and recalibration of S-L to e-SL was executed to make the pedagogy relevant to the partner communities’ needs. Meanwhile, Mr. Neil Oliver Penullar, COSCA Director, presented the roles of faculty members and the social action office in relation to service-learning.

Ms. Marietta Guanzon, COSCA SLP Coordinator, introduced the participants to the global program of UNISERVITATE. The UNISERVITATE program aims to generate systemic change in Catholic Higher Education Institutions (CHEIs) through the institutionalization of SL. 

There will be a UNISERVITATE subgrant program for DLSP tertiary schools. The subgrant is intended to provide financial support for the S-L institutionalization projects and activities of DLSP tertiary schools. It will support the achievement of Andrew Furco’s S-L institutionalization dimensions which include: 

• Philosophy and Mission of SL
• Faculty Support for and Involvement in SL
• Student Support for and Involvement in SL
• Community Participation and Partnership, and 
• Institutional Support for SL.

Activities related to SL institutionalization such as capacity building for faculty, students, and partner organizations, SL/e-SL projects, forums/webinars, action researches, advocacy activities, and project-related expenses may be financed by the subgrant.
