Glenn V. Alea, PhD

Glenn V. Alea was a research fellow at the University of Southampton, England, where he did his Ph.D. dissertation. He worked on the synthesis of tetrathiafulvalene derivatives and macrocycles containing sugar units. His MS research was on the isolation, characterization, and structural elucidation of terpenes from clavularia inflata, a soft coral, conducted at James Cook University in North Queensland.
Dr. Alea’s research group focuses on discovering new compounds with potential biological applications. The group explores the synthesis of derivatives of currently available drugs and the development of new or improved organic synthetic methodologies for modifying structures of biologically active compounds.
Dr. Alea has more than 25 years of teaching experience. He is the present dean of the College of Science. Before being dean, he also served the Department of Chemistry in various capacities- Chair. Vice-Chair, and Laboratory Coordinator. He is also actively engaged in several professional organizations, such as the Philippine Federation of Chemistry Societies (PFCS, President – since 2017) and the Integrated Chemists of the Philippines (ICP, Vice-President for Internal Affairs – since 2012). He is also a member of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Council for Chemistry.
