MA. CARMEN A LAGMAN, PhD
Dr. Ablan Lagman is a seasoned researcher and scientist with over 25 years of research experience with multi-disciplinary, multi-site, and multi-country research-for-development initiatives providing expertise in population genetics and molecular ecology of marine organisms to projects such as the domestication of giant clams in the Philippines, development of the Genetically Improved Farm Tilapia (GIFT) variety and genetic improvement methodology, which was adopted in the south, southeast, and east Asia. She led the population genetic project Population Interdependencies in the South China Sea (PISCES) with partners in coastal states to provide the science for the advocacy transboundary marine parks, including the Spratly Islands.Dr. Ablan Lagman focuses on integrating genetic and genomic characterization and expression with image analysis, GIS mapping, and mobile computing for practical problems in fisheries and aquaculture. Her team at the Practical Genomics Laboratory at DLSU works on developing technologies and interventions for species and variety identification, screening for temperature stress, and immune response, and for the improvement of both fisheries and aquaculture practice and increase production of mangrove crabs, giant clams, and tilapia. She continues to advocate for joint fisheries policies particularly in Batanes, Zambales, Palawan, and the West Philippine Seas. Dr. Ablan Lagman is a 2020 Filipino Faces of Biotechnology awardee of the Department of Agriculture Biotechnology Program, a 2018 Newton Agham Leadership in Innovation Fellow to the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK and the Asian Institute of Management, a 2015 Outstanding Research awardee Department of Science and Technology Philippine Council for Industry Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development and a 2013 Fulbright-Philippine Advancement in Agriculture Visiting Scholar to the Oregon State University. She has resided in Australia, Malaysia, Japan, and the US for extended periods of time as a research scientist for the WorldFish Center and the International Center for Living Aquatic Resources Management and as a recipient of various grants and fellowships throughout her career.
