The family of Exequiel “Syke” Garcia donated a white baby grand Yamaha piano to De La Salle University for the promotion of culture and arts. The donation was made through the Office of the Vice President for External Relations and Internationalization (OVPERI) under Dr. Laurene Chua – Garcia.
The piano, which is now housed in the Learning Commons, has a storied background. Among those who played on the white baby grand piano were former Vice President Salvador “Doy” Laurel, his wife, Celia, and well-known artist like Rudy Golez.
To celebrate the family’s contribution to the University, world-renowned pianist Dr. Raul Sunico held a performance last October 14 at the Learning Commons, entitled “Sunico on Syke.” Sunico performed classical pieces of Sergei Rachmaninoff, Frederic Chopin, and George Gershwin, and Filipino classics “Hanggang sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan” and “Bahay Kubo and Leron Leron Sinta” and his rendition of the music composed by the donor, entitled “Kailan Sasabihing Mahal Kita.”
