The growing interrelation and interdependence of the basic natural sciences prompted De La Salle University
to organize in 1982 the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, originally part of the College
of Arts and Sciences, into a separate unit, the College of Science.
The Science programs offered by the four departments are intended to meet the nation's need for specialists in the natural science and to prepare the student for medical school or careers in industry or in the academe.
De La Salle University-Manila boasts of being the only private university which was awarded by the Philippine Commission on Higher Education (CHED) with the Center of Excellence (COE) seal for all its Science and Mathematics programs namely, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. COS programs were evaluated by CHED as having the highest standards in instructional quality, research and publication, extension and linkages, and institutional qualifications. As a result, CHED awarded funds for student scholarships, faculty development, library and laboratory upgrade, research and extension services, instructional materials development, and networking with existing COEs and CODs.
Through the College of Science (COS), DLSU-Manila has built numerous international networks and collaborations of faculty members and researchers with the global scientific community. In addition, the COS faculty also has drawn cooperative agreements and memoranda of understanding with multinationals, small and medium-sized enterprises, and government agencies. Through joint projects, external organizations and COS are able to mutually optimize resources and help address the longer-term research and development needs of the Philippines.
The College of Science shapes students into the natural science mould by introducing them to basic and advanced scientific concepts, by encouraging research and independent analytical thinking, by developing communication skills and by inculcating a proactive stance in scientific issues. The College follows a holistic approach to instill in them a sense of national identity, a strong commitment to national involvement and human upliftment, all within the context of a Lasallian education with deep Christian orientation.
