Ethical Technology Assessment (ETA) of Artificial Intelligence(AI) and the Internet of Things (IOT) among Gen Z Population in the Pacific Region: The Case of the Philippines, Thailand and Japan

Project Director:  Melvin A. Jabar
Funding Agency:  Facebook, Inc.

This Facebook-funded research shall examine the perceptions and knowledge of and experiences with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) among the Generation Z population (18-23 years old) in the Philippines, Thailand, and Japan. Using the ethical technology assessment model proposed by Palm and Hansson (2006), the perception component shall investigate how Generation Z individuals view AI and IoT in terms of their ethical implications. This component will focus on five areas, namely, (1) control, influence, and power; (2) impact on social contact patterns; (3) privacy; (4) human production and health; and (5) human values. Results of the study shall be used to reflect on the question, “What level of autonomy or control should be provided to the affected individuals concerning the use of AI and IoT without compromising their legitimate purposes, and how should the control be provided?”

This research aims to solicit ideas from members of the Gen Z population themselves with regard to the extent of autonomy and control of the use of such technologies.
