Dr. Ruepert Jiel D. Cao joined the Department of Communication as an Associate Professor in 2023. He has taught in various tertiary institutions in Manila and Hong Kong before joining DLSU. He teaches video production, communication theory and research, and film studies at undergraduate and graduate levels.
Dr. Cao received his Ph.D. in Communication from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2022 as a recipient of the Hong Kong Ph.D. Fellowship Scheme. Broadly, Cao is interested in how different minority groups use media to navigate overlapping normative structures in everyday life. His current research explores how queer Asian men use sexually explicit and dating media in constructing, managing, and expressing their gender and sexual identities in hetero-patriarchal regimes in non-Western contexts. He has published in top communication and cultural studies journals such as the International Journal of Communication, Celebrity Studies, and Media International Australia. Dr. Cao is a member of the editorial team of Global Storytelling: Journal of Digital and Moving Images, which is published by the Michigan Publishing System.
