Capacity Building on Publishing in Scientific Journals Highlighted by MOA Signing with CLSU

SDRC Director Dr. Homer J. Yabut signed the third memorandum of agreement of 2024 between the Center and a partner HEI on July 3 at the Research and Extension Amphitheater of Central Luzon State University (CLSU). Signing on behalf of CLSU was College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) Dean Dr. Jay C. Santos.

The ceremonial signing took place during the morning session of the capacity building training with resource person John Jamir Benzon Aruta, DLSU research fellow and associate professor of the Department of Psychology. Awarded as an Outstanding Young Scientist by the National Academy of Science and Technology in 2023, Dr. Aruta has provided training for incoming board members of scholarly journals as well as for peer reviewers. After the opening remarks rendered by Asst. Professor Bessie May B. Soriano, Head of CLSU’s Department of Psychology, he discussed the importance of research ethics practice, mistakes to avoid in manuscript submission, the role of the review panel, and common reasons for rejection of paper submissions without review.

Attendees likewise shared their experiences in manuscript submission, which included incurring lengthy comments from reviewers, failing to expound on key ideas, and not selecting an appropriate journal for the subject they focused on. They raised questions on what range is acceptable when paying a publication fee, how to rank authors in terms of their contribution to co-authored papers, and what was the difference between citing other authors and citing one’s own work.

The afternoon session was devoted to a workshop in which participants were divided into groups and selected a topic for which they proposed strategies that would increase their chances of getting their paper published.

The activity was attended by 51 participants from the Office of the CASS Dean and the departments of Communication and Development Studies, English and Humanities, Filipino, Psychology, and Social Sciences.
