Law student garners Top 2 spot in Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition–Philippines

Tanada-Diokno School of Law (TDSOL) Juris Doctor student Genary Kyna Gonzales was recognized as Top 2 among all the competitors at the Philippine National Rounds of the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, held February 25-27 in Manila.

With 24 law schools competing and a total of almost 90 law students from all over the country participating as oralists at the moot, Gonzales was awarded at the closing ceremonies for having obtained the 2nd-highest score during the preliminary rounds.

At these oral rounds, competitors had to simulate a hearing before the International Court of Justice, with a panel of three practicing lawyers and law professors judging each round and interpellating the mooters.

Together with fellow JD students Juan Lorenzo Delfin, Carlie Manayan, and Francesca Sarmiento, the DLSU-TDSOL team ranked 5th place overall. Senior-year JD students Justin Christopher de Borja, Shane Andrew Magnaye, Lance Joseph Nolasco and TDSOL alumna Atty. Jena Tiongson acted as assistant coaches throughout the team’s months-long training.

Gonzales is vice president of the law school’s Law Moot and Debate Society (LAMDES), the student organization that represents TDSOL at moot competitions locally and in other countries.

The Jessup is the world’s largest and longest-running moot court competition, with participants from more than 800 law schools from 99 countries. The moot simulates a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice.
