Policy Brief on Fair and Decent Platform Work Published

Fairwork Philippines, a leading advocate for fair labor practices in the Philippine platform economy, has published a Policy Brief aimed at improving working conditions for platform workers in the Philippines. Drawing from the findings of its 2022 and 2023 reports, Fairwork Philippines highlights critical gaps in government regulation and platform policies that contribute to subpar working conditions in the country’s digital labor market.

According to Fairwork reports, over the past two years, only a few platforms in the Philippines have met the standards outlined by the Fairwork principles, indicating a pressing need for reform. The Policy Brief, “A Review of Policy Options and Scenarios on Philippine Platform Work” by Atty. Jayvy Gamboa (Legal consultant of Fairwork Philippines), offers a policy roadmap for legislative and executive action to ensure fair and equitable treatment of platform workers.

Key stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society organizations, labor unions, academia, and the general public, are encouraged to utilize the Policy Brief as a guide for shaping policies and initiatives related to platform labor. The document underscores the importance of collaboration and collective action in addressing the complex challenges facing platform workers.

The Policy Brief emerged from a series of consultations conducted by the Fairwork Philippines team, including engagements with key agencies of the Department of Labor and Employment, participation in national research congresses, and dialogue sessions with students and labor researchers at the University of the Philippines School of Labor and Industrial Relations.

Fairwork Philippines, supported by the University of Oxford and funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), is hosted by De La Salle University and managed by the DLSU-Social Development Research Center.
