Cycloseris similis

Nemenzo, 1976

Corallum almost circular, imperforate, large – around 14 cm across; edge distinctly undulate, even plicated, thin – only 1 mm excluding septa. Upper surface low convex, appearing rugged because of very marked difference in height among septa and their lax arrangement so that synapticulae very visible. Lower surface slightly concave; a number of concentric zones – at least four – faintly discernible; its small central portion – 12 mm across – protrudes a little, almost completely free of spines or papillae but uneven surface.

Septa in seven cycles although the seventh consists of few small ones limited along the edge. First three cycles thick and very tall, towering above the others; those of the fourth low on medial half but become almost as high and as thick as first three on their lateral half. First and second drop vertically into central fossa but third have medial ends sloping gradually. Fifth, sixth and seventh cycles much lower, developing triplet arrangement among them. Septal edges produce minute teeth on some segments, almost entire on other segments. Septal surface with minute granules. Septa imperforate except some of higher cycles. Along the edge of corallum, differences in height of septa very pronounced.

Costae very prominent along edge of corallum but gradually reduced in height and thickness inward until they become fine lines near center. Three to 5 low costae between two high ones. Costal edges bear small, low, sharp spinules; unevenly disposed; near central region, spinules very scarce.

Central fossa oval, appearing proportionately too small for corallum, rather open. Columella a small patch of apparently melted matter fusing with medial ends of septa, its surface with very low, rounded elevations..
