Astreopora stellae

Nemenzo, 1971

Corallum egg-shaped, creeping over dead piece of coral, its edges almost meeting below so that corallum free and unattached. Very thin epitheca present, not capasle of restricting downward growth.

Corallites of 2 distinct kinds—very protuberant and flush—irregularly spaced. Protuberant corallites conical, thick walled, average dimensions: height 5 mm, diameter at base 6 mm, diameter at top 3.5 mm, diameter of calice 1.5 mm. Flush or slightly protuberant corallites with calicinal diameter equal to that of protuberant ones scattered all around, together with many young corallites with less diameter. Wall armed with spines slightly wider than those on peritheca. Calices of lower corallites surrounded also by wider, vertical spines (echinules).

Septa very narrow, beginning from mural edge. Primaries slightly or markedly widened at bottom of deep fossa, but do not meet at middle. Secondaries very narrow ridges; still narrower tertiaries only occasionally present. Septal edges dentate or denticulate.

Peritheca narrow or wide; echinules bearing few spikes so they appear smaller than those on calicular wall; meshes of reticulation narrower than the threads.

Remarks: This is quite close to A. kenti Bernard. It can be distinguished from the older species by its more protuberant corallites with wider calices and the well developed perithecal and mural echinules.
