The DLSU Spectroscopy Laboratory is a full-service laboratory of the Central Instrumentation Facility under the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation. One of the instruments that the laboratory operates is the Shimadzu UV-Visible Spectrophotometer UV-2600. The instrument is located in Room 205 Dr. George S.K. Ty Central Instrumentation Facility at DLSU Laguna Campus in Binan, Laguna.

 

The facility offers Analytical Services using UV-Vis and accepts samples not only from DLSU researchers but also from outside clients (academe, government, and industry) for a fee (please see the schedule of fees).

– Measurement wavelength range: 220 to 1400 nm
– Equipped with Absolute Reflectance Attachment, 45° (ASR-3145 ), approximate sample size: 25 to 200 mm dia., or 20 to 150 mm square, up to 30 mm thick, measurement wavelength range: 300 to 800 nm
– With Polarizer attachment used for measurements with no impact from polarization properties

How much does UV-Vis analysis cost?

UV-Vis analysis is charged per sample. Each sample can be analyzed for up to 3 trials each, while sample replicates  (in a separate container) and standards are charged as individual samples each. The fees are inclusive of sample analysis only. Reagents, standards, solvents, and sample preparation must be provided/shouldered/performed by the client.

What are the requirements for the preparation of samples for UV-Vis analysis?
  1. Sample compounds must be accurately weighed.
  2. Dissolve samples in the appropriate solvent. Colloidal and suspended particles must be avoided. 
  3. Indicate the solvent used. In case of high concentration, the sample will be diluted depending on the response of the UV-Vis detector.
  4. Standard, blank solutions, and the solvent used must be provided by the client. 
  5. Please note that we can only offer qualitative analysis/ wavelength scan measurements. We do not have the standards for quantitative analysis.
  6. If quantitative analysis is required, clients must provide prepared calibration standards (in solution form) which are ready for analysis.
  7. For solid samples, 5-10 grams of each sample is required.
  8. For film samples, the dimensions required are 2.0 x 3.0 cm. For transmittance measurements of solid samples (e.g., film), the maximum thickness should be 3 mm.
  9. For liquid samples, 10-20 mL of each sample is required. 
  10. Please note that acquisition of absorbance, transmittance, and reflectance data will be billed separately.
  11. Samples must be properly labelled and securely wrapped to prevent spillage. Wrap the containers of light-sensitive samples in aluminum foil or store them in amber bottles. 
  12. For samples with low temperature storage requirements, secure them in an icebox, and add a “fragile” mark when necessary.
  13. Pack the samples carefully for transport.
How are samples submitted for analysis?

STEP 1. Send your inquiries to [email protected], indicate your name and institution.

STEP 2. Once the discussion has been finalized, the UV-Vis Analysis Form will be sent out to the email address you used or you may download the form here. Kindly fill out the form completely with all the details (one form for EACH SAMPLE) and send photos of each sample. INCOMPLETE FORMS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED. Carefully read the Terms and Conditions indicated on the sample analysis form. For questions regarding the form, send an email to  [email protected].

STEP 3. Prepare the samples. Ensure that the requirements for the preparation of samples for UV-Vis analysis are met. 

STEP 4. Submit the analysis form together with the sample. Alternatively, electronic submission of forms can be accommodated through email. 

STEP 5. A confirmation email will be sent to you once the form(s) have been received and checked. A quotation will be sent to you depending on the number of samples.

STEP 6. Once the form has been received, a quotation will be sent to you based on the number of samples and analysis you indicated in the UV-Vis Analysis form.

Once payment has been confirmed, CIF staff will provide you with information on how to send the samples to the lab.

STEP 8. Analyses results will be sent via email. Data and samples will be kept as stated in the analysis form.

Can I observe during the analysis?

Laboratory visits are restricted.

Do you offer rush analysis?

Yes. Rush analysis is available for twice the published rate. Please contact us for rush analysis at [email protected]

 

Do you interpret the spectra after the analysis?

No. We don’t provide spectra interpretation. 

 

Can you provide the CSV data of the spectra after the analysis?

Yes. CSV files can be requested and sent to your e-mail for free.

 

Do you give the raw data after the analysis?

Yes. We can send the raw data (spc file) through your e-mail. This requires UVProbe software to be processed.

 

Do you provide a formatted analysis report with registered chemist signatures? 

Yes, we do at an ADDITIONAL FEE of Php 1,500.00 per sample. 

 

What is the average turnaround time (TAT)  for  UV-Vis analysis? 

The turnaround time is 2 weeks, depending on the number of samples and the volume of job orders in the laboratory. 

 

Do you accept purchase order  (PO), job order (JO), work order (WO) terms of payment? 

NO, we do not accept PO, JO, or WO payment terms. At the moment, ONLY cash or cheque deposits are accepted. 

 

Do you accommodate and test samples on weekends and holidays? 

NO, we do not accept samples during weekends or holidays. Operating days are Monday to Friday (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM).
