[VCA] Online Classes During Class Suspensions

2/10/2020

With the approval of the Academics Council and the Chancellor’s Council, the following guidelines on online classes during class suspensions shall be effective immediately:

GUIDELINES ON ONLINE CLASSES DURING CLASS SUSPENSIONS

Rationale.

The University wishes to use technology support in its learning process. Recent years have shown a marked increase in the number of cancellations due to weather disturbances and other reasons. Ideally, the learning process is incremental and bite-sized. Due to class suspensions, teachers are forced to finish their syllabus and conduct make-up classes for several hours.

Students tend to suffer from information overload in these sessions. In addition, they are also forced to cram their projects because required knowledge and skills have not been acquired during the earlier part of the trimester. Class suspensions cause not only inconvenience, but also triggers anxiety in both students and faculty members.

This guidelines aims to encourage faculty members and students to continue with the learning process despite class suspensions by crediting online activities towards faculty-student contact time.

Provisions:

  1. When class suspensions are announced, classes shall shift to online mode.
  2. Online sessions during class suspensions must include one or more of the following activities:
    i.    Group discussions
    ii.   Online collaborations
iii.   Individual exercises worth 1.5 hours of preparation
    iv.   Other formative assessments
  3. Posting of reading assignments and homework ought to be followed by activities such as those mentioned above.
  4. No major exam will be given online under these circumstances.
  5. Students who are unable to go online during this period should be given the chance to fulfill their requirements when the situation normalizes. Faculty members may also utilize the weekly consultation hours to bring these students up to speed.
  6. Faculty who are unable to conduct online sessions during this period must schedule a make-up, either in online or face-to-face form. The make-up must be reported through the submission of a Faculty Attendance Form (“Pink Form”)
  7. Online classes held during class suspensions, or as make-up for class suspensions shall not be counted in the reckoning of hybrid classes.  Neither shall it be treated as an alternative class.
  8. While the conduct of online sessions during class suspensions would help reduce the need to hold make-up days, the Academics Council shall nevertheless look at the circumstances prevailing during the trimester.  If a general rebalancing of blended learning between online and face-to-face sessions is needed, the Academics Council shall declare make-up days.
