FTIR-ATR Spectrometer

FTIR-ATR Spectrometer

The DLSU Spectroscopy Laboratory is a full-service laboratory of the Central Instrumentation Facility under the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation. One of the instruments that the laboratory operates is the FTIR-ATR Spectrometer. The instrument is located in Room GT205 Dr. George S.K. Ty Central Instrumentation Facility at DLSU Laguna Campus in Binan, Laguna.

The facility offers Analytical Services using FTIR-ATR and accepts samples not only from DLSU researchers but also from outside clients (academe, government, and industry) for a fee (please see the schedule of fees).

Available Sampling Accessories:

1. Diamond ATR

  • single-reflection ATR
  • uses a type IIA diamond crystal as the interface between the sample and the infrared energy.
  • can accept samples with a pH range from 1 to 14
  • The single-reflection diamond has a 1 mm diameter sampling surface with 200 μm active area and provides approximately 2 μm depth of penetration for infrared energy at 1,700 cm-1
  • Sample types can be all hard solids, particulates, polymers, paint, fibers, pastes, liquids, and all pH ranges

2. Germanium ATR:

  • single-reflection ATR
  • uses a single bounce 45° crystal as the interface between the sample and the infrared energy
  • most suitable for higher absorbing samples such as tires, rubbers and o-rings, or any sample containing carbon black.
  • single-reflection Ge has a 1 mm diameter sampling surface and provides the following effective pathlengths:
    • 0.15 μm at 4,000 cm-1
    • 0.36 μm at 1,700 cm-1
    • 1.02 μm at 600 cm-1
What can we offer?

The DLSU Spectroscopy Laboratory offers the following services:

  • Spectrum Data Collection
  • Qualitative Search (Library Search) (11,448 spectral database)
How much does FTIR-ATR analysis cost?

FTIR-ATR analysis is charged per sample. The fees are inclusive of sample analysis only. Reagents, standards, solvents, and sample preparation must be provided/shouldered/performed by the client.

Please refer to the Spectroscopy Lab homepage for rates.

What are the requirements for the preparation of samples for FTIR-ATR analysis?
  1. Samples for FTIR-ATR analysis can be hard solids, particulates, polymers, pastes, liquids,  all pH ranges, and carbon black-filled polymers.
  2. Samples for one trial must be enough to cover the Diamond crystal (1 mm diameter sampling surface with 200 μm active area).
  3. For aqueous samples, around 1 mL is needed for one trial.
  4. Label the samples properly and wrap them securely to prevent them from spilling. Wrap light-sensitive samples in aluminum foil or place them in amber bottles.
  5. For samples with low temperature storage requirements, secure them in an icebox, and add a “fragile” mark when necessary.
  6. Pack the samples carefully for transport.
  7. Submit the sample to DLSU for analysis.
How are samples submitted for analysis?

STEP 1. Send your inquiries to [email protected], indicate your name and institution.

STEP 2. Once the discussion has been finalized, the FTIR Analysis Form will be sent out to the email address you used or you may download the form here. Kindly fill out the form completely with all the details (one form for EACH SAMPLE) and send photos of each sample. INCOMPLETE FORMS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED. Carefully read the Terms and Conditions indicated on the sample analysis form. For questions regarding the form, send an email to  [email protected].

STEP 3. Prepare the samples. Ensure that the requirements for the preparation of samples for FTIR analysis are met.

STEP 4. Submit the analysis form together with the sample. Alternatively, electronic submission of forms can be accommodated through email.

STEP 5. A confirmation email will be sent to you once the form(s) have been received and checked. A quotation will be sent to you depending on the number of samples.

STEP 6. Once the form has been received, a quotation will be sent to you based on the number of samples and analysis you indicated in the UV-Vis Analysis form.

STEP 7. Once payment has been confirmed, CIF staff will provide you with information on how to send the samples to the lab.

NOTE:  Samples will NOT BE PROCESSED  UNLESS COMPLETE PAYMENT IS DONE.

STEP 8. Analyses results will be sent via email. Data and samples will be kept as stated in the analysis form.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I observe during the analysis?

Laboratory visits are restricted.

Do you offer rush analysis?

Yes. Rush analysis is available for twice the published rate. Please contact us for rush analysis at [email protected]

Do you interpret the spectra after the analysis?

No. We don’t provide spectra interpretation.

Can you provide the ASCII data of the spectra after the analysis?

Yes. CSV files can be requested and sent to your e-mail for free.

Do you give the raw data after the analysis?

Yes. We can send the raw data through your e-mail. This requires the MicroLab PC or other relevant software to be processed.

Do you provide a formatted analysis report with registered chemist signatures?

Yes, we do at an ADDITIONAL FEE of Php 1,500.00 per sample.

What is the average turnaround time (TAT)  for  UV-Vis analysis?

The turnaround time is 2 weeks, depending on the number of samples and the volume of job orders in the laboratory.

Do you accept purchase order  (PO), job order (JO), work order (WO) terms of payment?

NO, we do not accept PO, JO, or WO payment terms. At the moment, ONLY cash or cheque deposits are accepted.

Do you accommodate and test samples on weekends and holidays?

NO, we do not accept samples during weekends or holidays. Operating days are Monday to Friday (8:00 AM to 5:00 PM).
