Asia Pacific Student Services Association (APSSA)
ABOUT APSSA
The Asia Pacific Student Services Association was established in 1988 with the intent to foster cooperation among members in the development of student affairs work and student services in the region; assist in the development of student affairs work and to strengthen its role in the development of tertiary education in the region; promote the welfare of students in tertiary education; and enhance cultural understanding and develop inter-cultural skills among members.
The association is registered in Hong Kong and its secretariat is based at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), the host university where one of the original founders of APSSA, Mr Luke Wong, is a retired Director of Student Affairs and was the first President of APSSA (1988-1992). Since then the APSSA leadership included Dr Enoch Markum of Indonesia (1992-1994); Prof Charas Suwenwela of Thailand (1994-1996); Dr Bryan Burke of Australia (1996 – 1998); Mr Luke Wong of Hong Kong (1998-2000); Dr Manuel M. Tejido of the Philippines (2000-2002); Mr K. Puniamurthy of Malaysia (2002-2004); Dr Janjira Wongkhomthong of Thailand (2004-2006); Assoc Professor Tan, Tek Koon of Singapore (2006-2008); Professor Ouyang Kang of China (2008- 2010); and Prof. Chris Hepperlin, of Australia (2010-2012).
Besides organizing conferences and training programs, APSSA also conducts study visits to the region and beyond for the purpose of professional exchanges. Among those initiatives were the following:
- In 1999, 17 members attended the annual conference of the Association of Managers of Student Services in Higher Education, United Kingdom, and visited Oxford University and universities in London. They were also guests of the National Student Affairs Organization of Germany, “Deutsches Studentenwerk”, at its then headquarters in Bonn, and the Studentenwerk in Osnabruck.
- In 2002, 21 members attended an International Symposium at University of California, Los Angeles and made study visits to various universities in California, New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and Georgia.
- In 2005, 16 members together with 13 of their counterparts from Germany, UK and USA attended a China Study Visit program in Central China. During the visit, they attended an International Symposium on the Changing Role of Student Affairs in Higher Education at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan.
- In 2007, the Deutches Studentwerk hosted an APSSA study visit by a large delegation to Germany. APSSA now has membership from institutions and individual members from across the Asia Pacific and beyond.
