The Bro. Alfred Shields, FSC Marine Station, formerly DLSU Marine Biological Station (MBS), is a research facility of the College of Science meant to further research and extension activities in coastal areas. It is located on a one-hectare lot in Matuod, Lian, Batangas, about three (3) hours drive from the Taft campus.
Basic laboratory and field research facilities are available in the station including:·
A resident scientist (a faculty member of the Biology Department in DLSU-Taft) may be available to supervise and assist in the day-to-day activities of the station. Common users over the past year are faculty and students of the Departments of Biology and Chemistry, as well as natural science students from DLSU- Dasmariñas, University of Sto. Tomas, and the Ateneo de Manila University.
Recent research and outreach activities conducted by the MBS include: a marine resource assessment of Cauayan, Negros Occidental, evaluation of coral reef conservation at Maricaban Strait, and various undergraduate and graduate theses on coral recruitment, competition and bleaching.
Those interested in using the facilities of MBS are advised to contact the Marine Biological Station. Reservations must be made at least one week in advance. The caretaker is allowed to turn away DLSU and non-DLSU visitors without proper authorization.
