Sports Development Program: Recruitment

  1. The recruitment program of De La Salle University is designed to maintain the competitive strength of varsity teams with the academic standards of the University as the foremost concern, maximizing the resources allocated for sports development.
  2. The recruitment of athletes for varsity is the prime responsibility of head coaches. Recruitment priority is in this order:
    • members of student selection teams, sports clubs and student bodies in general
    • secondary school graduates of System member institutions
    • secondary school graduates of feeder schools
    • other educational institutions
  3. The number of athletes that will be recruited will come from computer-generated information based on a four-year varsity strength projection.
  4. The varsity strength projection covers four-year periods focusing on the number of varsity athletes in each team categorized according to their year of graduation and the specific position they play in the team. The head coach is provided the projection towards the end of the 2nd term between December and January. It also informs the coach of the incentives that may be offered to potential recruits.
  5. The recruitment process begins with coordinating OSD counterparts in System-member institutions and feeder schools regarding DLSU varsity recruitment needs. This is followed by scheduled try-outs and preliminary selection. Potential recruits from these try-outs are registered in the Entrance Examination for Recruits, usually scheduled in April. The examinees are given two (2) to three (3) days tutorial before the examinations.
  6. If there are no candidates from the first three (3) sources in paragraph 2 above, potential recruits from other educational institutions are invited to join the try-outs. These candidates are also given two (2) to three (3) days tutorial before they take the entrance examinations.
  7. The Director of Sports Development will approve the list of candidates who will take the Entrance Examination for athletes. The Director will also approve membership to the varsity from among the successfully candidates recommended by head coaches.
  8. At the end of the recruitment process, varsity teams will have a balanced combination of athletes with varying athletic skills and years of competition experience – thus maintaining, if not enhancing the competitive strength of the teams on a continuous basis.
