Poetics in A New Key: Interviews and Essays

sample

Author: Marjorie Perloff
Published and distributed by De La Salle University Publishing House, 2013
P800.00 * ISBN 978-971-555-575-3 * 264 pages

Book Description:
Poetics in a New Key, a collection of interviews and essays, presents an accessible and provocative introduction to the critical thought of a most formidable and prolific critic writing now on twentieth-century poetry and poetics — Marjorie Perloff. The fourteen interviews in this volume — conducted by accomplished scholars and passionate seekers of the "new" poetics from the United States, Denmark, Norway, France, and Poland — provide a rich discussion of a spectrum of topics on poetry: its nature as a literary genre, its aesthetic preoccupations, its current state of existence, as well as its "differential" relation to art, politics, language, theory, and technology. This collection also features three essays by Perloff on matters both personal and professional: her academic memoir, poetry pedagogy, and the (re)constitution of the intellectuals in the 21st century. This book will prove to be an indispensable and inspiring resource for both scholars and poets who care to live a life of attention, on and off the page of poetry.

The Cardinal's Dog and Other Poems

Author: Christopher Norris
Published and distributed by De La Salle University Publishing House, 2013
P300 * ISBN 978-971-555-571-5* 167 pages

Book Description:
Book Description: These poems — or verse-essays — reflect many aspects of the author's longstanding philosophical, literary and musical interests. Deploying a variety of formal schemes they are strikingly diverse in subject-matter yet closely related in other ways. Their topics range from Nietzsche's tormented last years to Cardinal Newman's dog and from Philip Larkin as an unlikely test-case for Lacanian psychoanalysis to Alan Turing's war-work and its tragic aftermath. Other poems weave a complex thematic counterpoint around the melancholy tale of Kant's premature mental decline and the sad-comic saga of Heidegger's voyage to Greece in quest of first-hand authentication for his understanding of ancient Greek thought and its legacy.
Elsewhere Norris takes his cue from the composer Richard Strauss's intensely melancholy late work Metamorphosen as an oblique commentary on issues of music, history and politics. Several pieces have to do with false yet destructive conflicts such as those between body and soul, life and work, or literary content and form. The volume also includes a verse-essay treating themes from the work and episodes from the life of Ludwig Wittgenstein, in particular his ambivalent (for the most part very negative) attitude to Shakespeare.
Taken together, these pieces make a strong case for poetry — or one kind of poetry — as a medium wherein the exploration of formal possibilities goes along with the exploration of intellectually challenging and humanly significant themes.

Catherine Belsey: In Conversation

Authors: Catherine Belsey and David Jonathan Y. Bayot
Published and distributed by De La Salle University Publishing House, 2013
P180.00 * ISBN 978-971-555-564-7 * 40 pages

Book Description:
What is literature, after Theory? What is the nature and purpose of literary and cultural criticism? Is cultural studies the alternative to literary studies? Are poststructuralism and feminism alive and well? In an age of deconstruction and difference, how valid is "aesthetics" as a paradigm for literary and cultural studies? Does the category of Truth (or truth) or Reality (or reality) or History (or history) have a place in 21st-century critical practice? What is the role of pleasure in the profession of literary and cultural studies? These are some of the questions addressed by Catherine Belsey in the interview with David Jonathan Bayot. This discussion — candid and provocative — is a helpful introduction to the ideas of a most significant voice in literary studies and cultural criticism today.

The author, with his evident and even rare scholarship aside, dishes out personal reflections which underscores his fundamental wisdom which liberates library research from mere transmutation of readings into an evolution and transformation of resurrected spirits. General readers will find the formal, methodical and theoretical analyses engaging and provocative. Dr. F. P. A. Demeterio IlI essays with a style that assures and achieves what he personifies-"to be circumspect, prudent and to be perseveringly diligent as a scholar.-[to be able] to enlighten the politicised foundations of Philippine Studies." ISBN 978-971-555-572-2 * 90 pages

Book Description:

Published and distributed by De La Salle University Publishing House, 2012
P340.00 * ISBN 978-971-555-553-1 * 121 pages

Book Description:

To Write is to Choose: Ang Kasaysayan ng College Editors Guild of the Philippines (1931-1972)

Authors: Rowell Decena Madula and Gerg Anrol Rubio Cahiles
Published and distributed by De La Salle University Publishing House, 2012
P610.00 * ISBN 978-971-555-551-7 * 213 pages

Book Description:

Book Description:
MABUHAY! is an account of a defining moment in Philippine history—the Second World War. It focuses specifically on the period from December 8, 1941 when the Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor until April 9, 1942, the Fall of Bataan and Corregidor. Within this historical frame, Carlos Quirino and Marcial Lichauco constructed a historically-specific world that re-created the wartime conditions in Manila and part of Luzon, especially Bataan where Filipino and American soldiers made their last stand.
For readers born after the Pacific War, the novel is a rich source of information and insights into the conditions of wartime Philippines—the unrelenting fury of the Japanese invaders, the horrible conditions of prisoners at UST and Fort Santiago, the treachery of some Filipino collaborators, the heroism of Filipino and American soldiers, in a world turned upside down.
