Student Media Office

The Student Media Office (SMO), formerly Student Publications Office (SPO), provides training and development programs and services to Lasallian campus journalists, graphic designers, yearbook managers and creative writers. It trains the members of the University’s major publications for serious, disciplined journalistic and literary work as well as to help them achieve the autonomy envisioned by the Campus Journalism Law. It also works to ensure a smooth flow in the operations of the four major publications, namely Ang Pahayagang Plaridel, Green & White, Malate Literary Folio, and The LaSallian.

The life of a member of the Student Media Office (SMO) is truly exciting and full of surprising twists and challenges. It takes heaps of courage, hard work and patience to survive its daily grind. If you think you’ve got what it takes to be one with us, then you’re in for a great college life as an SMO member.

SMO is home to the best campus publications in the country. No matter your inclination, you may choose to join any of the four major publications, which all have exciting and unique features and offerings. The office is proud of its rich history, its stellar lineup of members and alumni, and its competitive training program.

Vision

The Student Media Office of De La Salle University-Manila provides opportunities for student journalists and creative writers to develop into responsible, credible and competent members of the publications. As guide and formator, it envisions a learning and dynamic atmosphere where press freedom inspires the students to be critical thinkers and advocates of truth in the service of the Lasallian Community.

Mission

We commit ourselves to develop students of excellence, integrity and character by providing opportunities for them to enhance their leadership and management skills, creativity and journalistic capabilities. Through integrated formation programs, we instill a deep sense of Lasallian Spirituality and advocate involvement in nation-building among the students for them to become well-rounded Lasallian writers and artists.

Objectives

In pursuing the office’s mission, SMO aims to:

• Encourage critical but credible thinking among student writers and in the community to pursuit their ideals;
• Provide opportunities for student writers to improve their craft through practice, interaction and instructions in journalism and literature;
• Create among the students a sense of responsibility toward and respect for its readers;
• Provide or facilitate the provision of competent advice to the campus journalists on matters concerning campus press operations and management; and
• Encourage the students to get involved in the publications and eventually to develop a pool of talents ready and able to serve the four major publications of the University.
