Biology Department sponsors environment QA training The Biology Department, a Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Center of Excellence (COEx), organized the “Training on Initial Environmental Quality Assessment” from August 6 to 13 at the Science and Technology Research Center. The training was conducted in collaboration with the Lasallian Institute for the Environment (LIFE) and DLS-Canlubang. Faculty members and staff of the different DLSU System schools attended the event. De La Salle Lipa, LIFE, and Assumption College likewise sent participants. Program of activities included the following lectures and presentations: “Chemistry and the Aquatic Environment” by Dr. Eric Punzalan; “Monitoring Toxic Contaminants in Manila Bay and its Inflowing Rivers” by Dr. Maricar Prudente; “State of the Philippine Environment: A Wake-up Call” by Dr. Pag-asa Gaspillo; and “Chemists Have Solutions” by Julita Robles; Meanwhile, the preparation and conduct of field and laboratory exercises including sampling design were facilitated by Dr. Wilfredo Licuanan and Apollo Cordon. During the training, the activities “Laboratory Analysis of Environment Quality” and “Case Study” were moderated by Dr. Jose Carandang VI, Dr. Josefina de Jesus, and Cordon. The event was also attended by Biology faculty Dr. Reynaldo dela Paz, LIFE Executive Director Ben Eusebio, and College of Science Dean Dr. Gerardo Janairo. The COEx is an imprimatur conferred by CHED only on the best of the best college programs in the country. It is a recognition of the quality of teaching, research, and extension service of the college. Mistades talks about Physics teaching at UP College of Science Vice Dean Voltaire Mistades talks about his experiences as a teacher of Physics before faculty members and students of the University of the Philippines-Diliman College of Education. The event was held on July 21 at the College’s Benitez Theater. Mistades’ talk was part of the “Francisco Benitez Lecture Series,” organized in commemoration of the UP-D College of Education Foundation Week and the International Year of Physics. His presentation “Learning Physics May Be Frightening, But It Could Be Fun, Too” was based on a research that he conducted about student expectations and teacher’s Marketing faculty launches PR book Marketing Management Department Associate Professor Dr. Lucas Santiago launched his latest book, Surviving in Public Relations (in the age of communications), on July 27 at the Dusit Hotel Nikko in Makati City. The launching was attended by members of the Philippine Association of Public Relations Counselors, Inc., Public Relations Society of the Philippines, and Philippine Marketing Association. Surviving in Public Relations contains in depth discussions on the plight of public relations firms in the Philippines. The book offers PR practitioners with recommendations on habits and practices that will allow them to realistically face threats and weaknesses which can bring about failure to their business and professional thrusts.
