IT students automate CHED scholarship system

A group of College of Computer Studies Information Technology Department students recently completed the Scholarship and Foreign Student Administration System (SFSAS) of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

An undergraduate thesis of Alvin Aleria, Ginnalou Gocheco, Gino Serranilla, and Ian Jason Vasay, the SFSAS was finished in three months and is set for implementation this year. Assistant Professor Sherwin Ona is their thesis adviser.

The SFSAS aims to improve the scholarship, foreign student, and special orders management at CHED. Designed for use in CHED regional offices, the partially web-based SFSAS has three components. These are the Student, OSS, and CHEDRO Modules.

The Student Module is for site visitor and student use. This section contains information on the different scholarship programs of CHED. The OSS Module enumerates the guidelines that students and regional offices must follow. The CHEDRO Module facilitates enrollment, voucher release, record updating, and masterlist creation.

According to CHED Executive Director Dr. William Medrano, as stated in his letter to CCS Dean Caslon Chua, “The system will help CHED in minimizing overall cost of operation by streamlining the process in providing financial assistance to students.” It will also provide convenience to the users in terms of communication and information management, he added.

CHED is the governing body covering both public and private higher education institutions as well as degree-granting programs in all tertiary educational institutions in the Philippines. It was established in May 18, 1994 through Republic Act No. 7722 or the Higher Education Act of 1994.
