Javier talks on forest management

Dr. Ma. Elena Chiong-Javier, associate professor of the Behavioral Sciences Department, attended the “Symposium on Tropical Rainforest Rehabilitation and Restoration – Existing Knowledge and Future Directions” held from July 26 to 28 at the Shangri-La’s Tanyung Aru Resort in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.

During the conference, Javier presented her paper titled “Secondary Local Organizations and Forest Management in the Philippines.” The paper analyzes 12 local organization’s prospects for engaging in watershed management, the ways in which they are involved in forest conservation or rehabilitation, and the constraints that they encounter as they serve the roles of a secondary organization.

Organized by Yayasan Sabah, World Wide Fund, Sabah Forestry Department of Malaysia, and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the symposium was intended as a forum on the states of knowledge of tropical rainforest rehabilitation and restoration. It sought to enable people to explore ways of enhancing the values of deforested areas.

CED faculty promote sports psychology

In an effort to develop the competency of athletic trainers in the field of Sports Psychology, faculty members of the College of Education conducted a two-day seminar-workshop for athlete trainers in Region 3. Coaches, physical educators, counselors, and student-athletes attended the event that was held on July 22-23 at the University of Assumption in San Fernando, Pampanga.

The theme of the workshop was “The Significance of Sports Psychology in Athletic Training.” The activity was part of the outreach program of the Association of Sports Psychologists and Physical Educators of the Philippines (ASPPEP).

CED faculty members who presented during the event were Dr. Julian Montano of the Counseling and Educational Psychology Department, Dr. Elizabeth Mascardo of the Physical Education Department, and Lilet Bautista of the Educational Management Department. They are ASSPEP president, vice president for External Affairs, and board member respectively.

Dr. Susan Estanislao, counselor of the Center for Counseling and Development, was also among the speakers during the workshop. She serves as vice president for Internal Affairs of ASPPEP.

St. Brother Benilde Romançon (1805-1862)

Pierre Romançon was born in the village of Thuret in France on June 14, 1805. When he joined the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, he was given the name Brother Benilde. He was assigned to teach children in the primary grades and took special pride in teaching catechism.

Pope Pius XII stressed that his sanctification was attained by enduring “the terrible daily grind” and by “doing common things in an uncommon way.”

He died on August 13, 1862, and was canonized on October 28, 1967.
