Organized by the Marketing Communication Office, the LSA is an annual journalism competition that supports the exemplary contributions of print, broadcast and campus journalists in the topic of youth and education. This year’s winners are Raul Fabella and family, Ali Vicoy, Howie Severino, Ray John Bangi, and Eden Estopace. All the winners received cash prizes and trophies designed and created by noted glass sculptor Ramon Orlina. The Fabellas of the Philippine Daily Inquirer bagged the award for Outstanding Feature Story for Print for their article, “Learning by doing could revolutionize RP education.” The article was chosen for its inspiring and insightful narration of how a school in severe financial straits has revived the romance of learning and revolutionized education. Vicoy, a Manila Bulletin lensman, received the Outstanding Published Photograph award for his entry, “Mangyan Boy.” His photo was able to establish the distinct generational difference between the main subject and his surrounding. Severino’s “Little Bad Boy: Binatang Rizal sa Europa,” was recognized as the Outstanding Feature Story for Television. Aired on GMA-7’s I-witness, the documentary gave viewers a rare glimpse at the little known chapter in Jose Rizal’s life in Europe. Meanwhile, the Outstanding Feature Story in a School Organ award, a new category launched this year, was given to Bangi of San Beda College. He won for his entry “Beleagured CAP, beleagured future.” The article gave an accurate reportage of a social issue that affected the student population. The special category on Outstanding Feature Story on De La Salle University-Manila was won by Eden Estopace of The Philippine Star for her entry, “Text messaging for the blind: Proudly Filipino.” By highlighting a thesis project by Electronics and Communications Engineering students of the University, the article regarded DLSU-M as a vibrant institution committed to being a resource for the marginalized Filipinos.
