Licuanan speaks on coastal care Biology Professor and Br. Alfred Shields FSC Marine Station Head Dr. Wilfredo Licuanan recently gave a talk before a group of business executives at the Manila Inter-Continental Hotel in Makati City. Titled “Tsunamis, Mangroves, and Marine Sanctuaries,” the presentation was given during a joint meeting of the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (FINEX) and the Philippine-Finland Association (PFA). Licuanan discussed some of the issues affecting the coastal resources management program of the DLSU Shields Marine Station and the Center for Social Concern and Action (COSCA) at Talim Bay, Lian, Batangas. After his talk, FINEX members led by its president, Merlito Salazar, pledged funds for a motor boat and the hiring of more research/extension assistants for the project. With the donation, the Station and COSCA can collect more data which they can use as scientific basis for their conservation initiatives. TRED faculty present paper in Bible confab Dr. Arnold Monera and Fr. Randolf Flores, SVD of the Theology and Religious Education Department (TRED) were among the paper presenters in the 6th Annual Convention of the Catholic Biblical Association of the Philippines (CBAP). The convention was held at the PHINMA Training Center in Tagaytay City last July 22-24. Monera, TRED chair, was one of the keynote speakers of the conference. He presented his exegetical paper “The Christian and the State According to the New Testament.” During the convention, he was also elected member of the Board of Trustees of CBAP for this school year. Meanwhile, Flores presented a workshop paper titled “(NAB) Elihu’s Critique of Power and Wealth: An Exegesis of Job 36:16-21.” Magno writes in social development book Dr. Francisco Magno, associate professor of the Political Science Department and director of the La Salle Institute of Governance, is one of the contributors of a new book on social development. Edited by Dr. Manuel Contreras of the Social Development Institute, the book is titled Corporate Social Responsibility in the Promotion of Social Development: Experiences from Asia and Latin America. It is published by the Inter-American Development Bank based in Washington, D.C. The chapter written by Magno is on “Investing in Social Responsibility: Corporate-Community Engagement in Cebu City, Philippines.” It examines the impact of corporate responsibility and civil society interventions on environmental governance, multi-stakeholder participation, and local development in the upland villages. The participants in the volume include representatives from various academic and research institutions such as the National University of Singapore, University of Indonesia, Golden Gate University (San Francisco), Universidad de los Andes (Columbia), Daiwa Institute of Research (Japan), Population and Community Development Association (Thailand), Casa de la Paz (Chile), and Instituto Ethos de Empresas e Responsabilidade Social (Brazil). Earlier versions of the chapters were presented in workshops held in Tokyo and Okinawa last year.
