Photo by Julio Sambajon, CCP. | Communication Department faculty and alumni won most of the top awards in the first Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival and Competition 2005 held last July 17 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Main Theater. Lasallian awardees are led by Dr. Clodualdo del Mundo Jr., Communication Department full professor and chair. In the Full Length Category, Del Mundo’s entry Pepot Artista was awarded Best Film and Best Editing. He is both the screenwriter and director of the production while Daniel Adapon (AB CAM ‘00) is the film editor. Also included in his production team are Line Producer Michael Kho Lim (CAM-BMG ‘99), who is also a faculty member of the Communication Department; Assistant Director Maricris Calilung (AB CAM ’96); Original Music and Scorer Lorrie Ilustre (BSC Accounting); Sound Editor Rachelle Tesoro (AB CAM ’98); and Script Supervisor Ma. Lolita Lachica (CAM-MMG ’99). Other La Salle alumni who won major awards are Mario Martin Cornejo (AB CAM ‘99), Coreen Jimenez (CAM-BMG ‘96), Rica Leticia Arevalo (AB CAM ’95), and Joel Ruiz (AB CAM ‘97). Also in the Full Length Category, Arevalo was handed the Best Direction trophy for her work ICU Bed # 7 while the film’s lead star Eddie Garcia received the Best Actor recognition. Cornejo and Jimenez’s Big Time received the Best Screenplay and Best Sound Design Awards.
In the Short Film Category, Ruiz was awarded Best Short Film for Mansyon, while Lawrence Fajardo of the University of St. La Salle-Bacolod was given a special jury prize for Kultado. An on-campus film festival showcasing these award-winning Lasallian entries is slated this September. The Cinemalaya Film Festival was organized by the CCP together with the Film Development Council of the Philippines, and the Philippine Multimedia Systems, Inc. It aimed to discover, encourage, and honor a new breed of movie mavericks and focus attention on independent films.
