COE alumnus, Star Scholar makes it to 2005 TOSP list
College of Engineering alumnus and Star Scholar Beauregard Grant Cheng (BS MEM ‘05) was recognized as one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP). He received the award from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in a ceremony held at the Malacañang Palace on July 1.
A member of the pioneering batch of the Star Scholars, Cheng graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Manufacturing Engineering and Management. He is a recipient of the Br. Gabriel Connon Award during the 142nd De La Salle University-Manila Commencement Exercises. This graduation special award is the highest distinction given to a DLSU-Manila graduate.
Cheng is also the first ever recipient of the international recognition Joseph Novek Outstanding Student Leader Award. He was selected from other student-nominees worldwide on the basis of his outstanding leadership and entrepreneurship skills.
Among his other achievements are the 2004 BPI Science Award, Procter and Gamble Excellence Award, and Outstanding Undergraduate Thesis. He was also named Philippine representative to the Hitachi Young Leaders Initiative.
The TOSP awardees were chosen from among 235 nominees from 350 colleges and universities nationwide. The number was narrowed down to 148 candidates whose qualifications were deliberated over by a National Screening Committee. Twelve finalists were selected from the science-based fields, while 12 finalists were selected from the non-science-based fields.
An annual search program, the TOSP Awards is a recognition of what the Filipino youth can do and achieve. “The TOSP serves as a laboratory of leaders,” says Jose Concepcion Jr., RFM Foundation chairman. Started in 1961, TOSP has produced outstanding contributors in the fields of government, business, academe, church, and civil society.
The TOSP Program is a project of RFM Foundation, the Commission on Higher Education, RFM Corporation, and in cooperation with National Bookstore and Rotary Club of Makati Central.
